Steering column interchange?

I need a new steering column since mine was broken by thieves. Are third gen steering columns car-specific, or will a column from a Monte Carlo, etc fit? How about later year 3rd Gen columns for a 1983 T/A?
Thanks,
Rob

I'm not sure about interchange from other cars. I think so anyways.

I do know something though, if you don't find a column from an 82 or 83 f-body you need to do some rewiring for the windsheild wipermotor.

82/83 got the big *** multiplex thingy wiper motor witch relies on the switch in the column being operated by grounding. 84 up operated by power.

you need to take the white wire coming from the column and ground it. and flip a few other ones around.

If you run into this i can tell you exactly what to do.

I think 89' and later had the VATS system. The chip in the key deal.

Did they break your whole column or just the plastic case? When the thieves got me, I just replaced the plastic case with a METAL one from a 78 Buick. I had to drill a hole for the pin that holds in the lock cylinder and make the hole for the turn signal lever bigger but that's it, easy fix!

The plastic case is broken and a metal guard has been installed over everything. Looks real ugly as its paint is all chipped up. The neutral/park override no longer works, and I can put my key in the ignition, turn it away from the lock position, then I can remove the key (like my old '54 Chebbie...) and run the car keyless. I could probably get parts and replace and repair everything, but I was kinda hoping I could find a cheap replacement instead!
thanks,
Rob
