I've seen one guy do this swap and it turnes out extremely well. I believe it was Stuart69427, ot something like that. He used a thirdgen radio pod out of a firebird. It looked like it took a lot of time and effort. But that's what this hobby is all about. Good luck!!

You can keep the thirdgen radio pod and i would recommend it, as for the console, both auto and manual are the same, just the shifter plate is different, just go to gm and get a difference shifter console

I am in the process of putting a 4th gen automatic console in my 86 Firebird. While not a Camaro, a couple of my issues should be the same. I used a 01 automatic console off ebay.
I had to do two things. I had to move the shifter assembly back about 4 inches. This is because the later model consoles are a little higher in front, and thus need to move back a little to clear the radio housing.
The other thing, was no matter how hard I tried the part on the console plate that fits over the shifter would not fit and let the console sit all the way on the floor. The reverse lockout switch in the side of the shifter interferes with the bottom of the plate. I had to cut off the section of it that goes over the shift handle, and the two pedastals the screws that hold it on that side mount to. Now it's just an open hole over the handle, and I need to find soemthing to cover it.
I think it would fit better with an actual 4th gen shifter assembly, but not sure. I'll have to take a closer look at my 94's shifter and see the differences.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I'll get some pics when I have time, but I'm rebuilding the tranny in the 94 and that's taking up all my time at the moment
BTW here is the part # list and pricing from Team Chevrolet The # is the # in the picture on the dealers part sheet I attached. Bsically if you ordered all that you would get a complete console. Not bad considering used ones go for 200 on ebay.
