cupholder idea

i was wondering if you could just cut a hole like the yellow in the pic and just put something in there to make it a cup holder. has anyone done this? or is there something under there that would make it where you couldnt do it? anyone know?

i know someone asked this same question last summer. i don't remember what kind of response the guy got. if you don't need your ash tray, you should do the cup holder mod found in the tech articles https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/cupholder.shtml

It's the perfect place for a cupholder, I have one there in my 1989 RS! I have window and hatch switchs on the panel as well but had no problems with any wires or brackets being in the way. I used a black plastic dice cup for the liner (4" deep and straight-sided) and used silicone adhesive to attach it to the console panel from underneath. I got the idea from '82 Z/28's that had the clock there. If a clock could fit, so can my Cokes!! BTW, my car is a stick too and this mounts low enough that I don't hit the cans while banging gears.

works great! i tried putting one up where ashtray is but when i tore into it there was no room underneath. the area you are pointing out has all sorts of room. i used a 1 cup plastic measure. i coated the inside with that black bed liner paint in a can. gave it a nice finish then glued it up from the bottom. good luck

I don't know. I think it would make it awkward to shift, and damn annoying if you have a manual. I usually rest my arm on the console lid, that space you mention is right in the way, I'd either be constantly knocking my drink over, or having to keep my arm suspended to shift, which could get tiring after a while. Closer to the radio area, i.e. where the ashtray is, would be better.

i was going to do the ashtray cupholders, but my radio kinda sticks out too far and when i looked under there it looked like there wasnt really any depth, BTW the pic isnt of my car, its of camarokev400. my car is an automatic and had the window and hatch buttons there.
1982z28... do you have a pic of your console with the cupholder?

I did the cupholders where the ash tray is like the tech article. Thing is my faceplate on my sterio rotates all the way around
and it would hit the damn cans every time I started or shut
off the car

So that is why I am attempting to switch the radio and climate
control around like on the newer cars... Another thing is when you have like fast food cups in there and stuff you can't even
see your damn radio. That really annoys me.... hmm maybe I
will put the cup in that other place.....

that area

didnt some camaros have clocks right there... there should be plenty of room for a cup holder, especaly if u get the console top w/ the clock, pull the clock & fit the holder in it... what i will probably do... the clock consoles arent worth a whole lot are they.. dont wann destroy one of the 3 i found...

Ok I was thinking about placing a cup holder in the ashtry area. I thinking of just the drivers side one and on the passenger a after market fuel gage, becuse I'm placing a tach in place of the huge gas gage.
