Fiberglass body parts worth it? And how much to have put on?
I'm getting a new paint job in a few months and have been debating about getting some fiberglass parts. A glass hood is definite. But are glass front and/or rear fenders worth it? What about a glass rear hatch with Percy's Speedglass (lexon)? Or glass doors w/ Speedglass? Or a Speedglass windshield?
I'm not going to buy all the above, I just want to know which ones will save me the most weight in the right places to maximize my money. I would think the rear hatch with Speedglass would save a ton of weight, but the rear is not really where I want to cut the weight from. The front fenders would be the best place to lose the weight, but would they save enough weight to make a difference and justify the cost?
The car is a street car and I want to keep it looking fairly stock and I want it to look good. Would just the glass hood and front fenders be my best bet? What glass parts do you recommend and approx. what would a decent shop charge to put on your recommended parts (just to put the parts on right and have them ready for paint, NOT to paint them)?

I was thinking these front fenders from Unlimited Products and an ASCD IROC Turbo hood.
Does that sound reasonable? They are $150 per fender and weigh 8 lbs. each. What do the steel fenders weigh?

Just to let you know those unlimited fenders may get pricey. I was going to order a set for my camaro, but backed out. The fenders come Straight at the door line, you have to cut them to fit. I ended up spending my money on engine components instead.

It is true you don't want to remove that weight from the rear, it will negatively affect many aspects of performance (all have been discussed before). Anyway Lexan hatches and fiberglass decklids are non functional so to speak because they are meant to fastened with Dzus fasteners to a fiberglass body and even if you could creatively rig it, the gas struts would crack the fiberglass the first time you tried to close the hatch.
Are fenders worth the money? Depends on how much money you have. Since you have a goal (which IS the first step, most people don't) of keeping the car a nice street car, then no, I don't think they justify the cost.
Your best bet, would be definitely the hood. PinOn hoods are super light but they are a real pain if you work under there, you still can save many many pounds with a bolt on.
If you want to save more weight, spend the money on things that save weight AND add performance. Lighter heads, intake, water pump, starter.
Forget about fiberglass bumpers if you have to parallel park anywhere.
Forget about fiberglass doors if you plan on ever leaving the safety of your driveway.
Hope this helps

Just keep in mind that unless you want your car to look like a house of mirrors, you're going to be signing your paychecks over to your body man for many months to come. Fiberglass panels are wavey as hell. Also, at 8lbs, you're only going to save a couple pounds over the stock fenders. The stock fenders can't be 10 or 12 pounds each. I'd do the fiberglass hood and if you want to save more weight, put aluminum heads on the car.

A Lexan backlite (rear glass) would make a big diff, since glass is heavier than steel per unit volume. I wouldn't recommend replacing the windshield, since I assume the sand the roads there in Ohio come wintertime, and it would pit easily.
