Analog speedo died tonight, any thoughts why?

Or how to fix it? I'm gonna pull off my dash tomarrow and make sure the cable is securely connected. Anythought on why/how this happened?
Thanx

3 most common?

-Cable slipped off behind the dash.

-Cable came off at the transmission (though less likely. Mine did it all the time because the plastic threads were stripped)

-Cable snapped internally.

-Square part on inside cable rounds off

Little less common:

-Somethin funky with the magnet

-Moving part inside binds on piece of broken plastic from odometer spool (that was fun to finally find out)

-No lube. Cable binds.

-It's girlfriend the tachometer breaks up with it and it commits suicide in response.

Thanks for you reply. I'm gonna rip apart the dash today on my day off to see if the cable just came off behind the dash (that's what I'm hoping). Thanx

Don't forget those two "fake nuts", in each lower corner of the instrument panel. You might as well re-lube the cable if you get that far. Just pull the cable out as you twist it. When you get it all the way out of the sheath, put a glob of speedo cable lube in your hand. As you spin the cable, run the cable thru your hand, and back into the cable sheath. DO NOT LUBE THE LAST 1/2-3/4 INCH OF THE CABLE, WHERE IT GOES INTO THE SPEEDO! As you turn the cable, eventually, it'll seat itself inside the trans.

If you have cruise control, you'll only get a cable that's about 2 feet long.
