1990-1992 guage swap into 82-89 car

Has anyone done a new interior guage swap into an 82-89 Camaro?

I am HOPEFULLY going to be purchasing an 88 IrocZ pretty soon and want to get the 90-92 guage look back... I really miss my '92 RS!

You will have to change the entire dash, since the 82-89 was calbe driven, and the 90-92 was electronic. Things I believe are quite different. You will also have to install the sender unit for the digital dash in the transmission, and there might be other things that I do not know of.

In short, its a big undertaking, can be done, might need to re-wire entire car.

sorry

I also was looking into this and decided it was to much of a pain... Keep in mind you have to swap out that whole big plastic dash and get the 91-92......

Why not get a 1990 IROC-Z instead of the '88?

Dash Swap

You dont have to swap the entire dash because of the differences in how the speedos work. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REWIRE ENTIRE CAR!! That's nonsense. Guys that are swapping in T-56 trannies who have cable driven speedos arent swapping out entire dashes....or rewiring entire cars....geez.

Reson for swapping out the dash is because of the design difference between to the two gauge clusters. One will not swap in place of the other. Want it to look right? Swap out the entire dash.

The hardest part about the whole thing is making sure you have repinned the two connectors behind the cluster, you need to know the pin out of what is on your car and then the pin out for the dash you are going to swap in. Also you need to be aware of what signal is going to your ECM. You might or might not need a VSS buffer along with a new VSS sending uint as mentioned below.

The actual swapping of the dash it self? Easy.

I put the dash out of a 92 Z into my 89 Rs. I had to swap the dash mounts that is beside the doors. For some reason it was different. Then I replace the sensor in the trans. It just pluged right up.

PS. I did do the tpi swap at the same time so I dont know about the wiring under the hood. I should all go back together on the iroc. It was well worth the time and money. Now my car looks just like a 92 Z inside and out.

i did this.. 92 cluster in a 83 dash.. basic rundown of what u need to do for the swap...

1 = (optional, but makes things ALOT easier) remove dash from car
2 = remove gague cluster from dash
3 = grind down all 4 of the top gague cluster supports (one in eash top corner and 2 in the top middle)
4 = gring off all the tabs on the 90-92 cluster making the top and bottom flush
5 = (optional, but makes things look better) fill in the holes in the 90-92 cluster w/ putty or something simmular
6 = (optional, but makes things look better) paint the 90-92 cluster brighter white (mine was a **** yellow color)
7 = bolt down the cluster to the dash.. i used 4 screws: 2 near the top middle and 1 in each bottom corner
8 = sand down the "NON-VISIBLE AREA BELOW LINE" off as it will be visible
9 = rewire the cluster connections (i have a printout of it that i could post or u can find it by doing a search in the electronics forum by 99Hawk120)
10 = need a speed sensor from a 90-92 for the tranny (donno bout wiring the sensor into the ecm as i also ditched my computer)

i replaced all my sending unit as i was changing from an idiot cluster (it only had 2 "gagues" (speedo and fuel))..

I gotta replace my cluster because it looks like half the gauges are dead (or that circuit board they run through anyways).

The guy at the junkyard said I had to have the numbers on the label where it sits ontop of the steering wheel matching otherwise they wont work. What was he on about?

I have a 92 RS, so if i find a cluster from 90 on I should be ok??
ANd what should I expect to pay for one anyways?
