Roof fading and chipping

I've had my RS for a year now and ever since I got it the roof has been faded and chipped. The hood is fine...but the roof is lookin' pretty bad. It's down to the primer but not any deeper than that. The primer looks fine. I want to get a 25th Anniv. Stripe Kit (probably silver - the car is teal) but obviously I should get the roof fixed before I put something over it! My buddy works at a body shop and he said it'd be around $500 to fix the roof and include a full detail. What do you think?

From a body shop program to give you an idea on a 92 RS without T-Bar Roof.

Refinish Only time is 2.8 hours.
Clear coat time 1.1 hours.
Paint and Materials 85.80
Hazardous Waste Disposal 5.00
Mask for Overspray 5.00

So far you have 245.94 (this includes our 6.375% tax)

The only thing left is hours of bodywork and prep on the top.

Hourly bodyshop rate calculated at $36.00 per hour.

Body prep could be done in two to four hours.

2 Hours Would bring you to 322.53
or 4 Hours would bring you to 399.12

Color sand & buff would be about 1.2 hours or 43.20

So without seeing your car to evaluate and figuring 4 hours roof prep that comes to 445.07.

Sounds like he's being pretty fair providing that includes the materials and color sanding and buffing. He might also be calculating blending into the quarters also which I haven't. It's hard to have a stop line and it probably be best to blend.

Yep...he said they'd probably blend it into the quarter. Ok...so I'll go with his shop. What do you think of the striping kit though? I saw these at ThirdGenResource I think. Are they good? Easy to put on? I heard the only bad thing is that if you want to take them off, the paint under them will be darker than the rest of the car due to sun fading.
