NEONS Illegal?

Ok I have blue neons on my back plates. I live in Texas. Now I know that cops have seen them on my Camaro. Still I have never before been pulled over for them. I see them on other cars too.
But anyways I go to Sheppard AFB here and the damn gate guards stop me and say your not allowed on and that these are illegal in Texas. I think that they just don't have anything better to do than harrass me. What do you guys think. I know they might be illegal in other states but i know for a fact not here cuz thats where I bought them.
Thanks

They are illegal everywhere. You cannot have anything coming from the back of your car unless its red or amber. And the same from the front, only white and amber.

If cops have seem them on your car then it sounds like the gaurd doesnt have anything better to do. If you want to avoid a ticket I would say best thing to do is call the DMV or ask a deputy or something about them, somebody who is out in a car and can pull you over and write you a ticket. Make sure you say that you are "thinking about buying some and just wondered before you put them on" or they might nail you right there if you have them on. Some cops let you get away with little things. I drive by cops all the time with no front license plate and nobody says a word about it.

Just because you bought them in Texas doesnt mean they are legal. Stores are allowed to sell them because they aren't the ones putting them on the car and you are responsible for turning them on. Their is always the possibility that you bought them and are going to use them in a different county or state or whatever. I know here in Ohio you can buy Fireworks even though they are illegal to use in Ohio. Also you can buy radar detectors even though they are illegal to use in Ohio. I was told that if a cop catched you with one in your car he is allowed to take it from you.

Exactly what Adam said, basically, the only LEGAL thing you can do with neons, it have them on while you are parked somewhere....

It might just be that you were in the wrong place, at the wrong time. I had no front liscense plate on since i purchased my car in June. Well, 2 weeks ago i was on a back road and a cop stopped me for having no front plate. Most likely he was just trying to scare me because he probably thought i was speeding.

I had blackouts but i decided on my own power that they aren't safe.

They're illegal in IL IF they are either blue anywhere on the vehicle because blue is an Emergency Vehicle color. Or if you have red on the front, and that pretty obvious why.

My buddy had a 96 Dakota with them. He thought he was smart and bought green (black truck). He got pulled over and the cop gave him a ticket. He couldn't give him a ticket for the two things I mentioned earlier, so he wrote it for reckless driving!!!!

My buddy was like "WHAT!!!!" He went to court to fight it and was found guilty w/court supervision. They said it was something that could distract the attention of another driver, which could cause an accident. Well anytime you endanger other drivers, it's "Reckless Driving".

Thank Gød he got court supervision, otherwise his insurance would have killed him.

they arent illegal here. and if they are illegal to use in texas then why arent they illegal to sell? if your tickted for neons then the seller of the neons should also get a ticket for selling "illegal" equipment.

WAY WRONG

Check your local and state laws, thats the best way to find out, in Virginia beach they are illegal while drivign but not while parked, however across the bay in Newport News they are perfectly legal, the state law varies.

Basically... CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS

Since you know everything, go ahead and prove it then. I will simply not put the goofy things on my car.

i got pulled over for speeding, but he let me off for the speeding ticket, gave me a ticket for my tinted windows and he told me that my "red" neon lisence plate was illegal and he would let me go on that too. good thing i was nice to him.

i have know that the only color of lights you can have on a car is red amber and clear or white but in the front you can only have clear\white and amber. and just if anyone trys to bring it up that the truckers usally have pruplre or red lights behide their cab. the only reason they can have those is because they have a trailor blocking them from behide.

and as for the blackouts those two are only legal in the day time.

the reason they places can sell them is because if you read on the package all of them say for SHOW OR OFF ROAD USE ONLY!!!!!!

and the reason some cops dont stop you for them is because they have better things to do but yes i will admit some dont and some just like to be ****** about it.

i have been stopped for the blackouts in a friends monty and they were not even blackouts just little bowties but i still got a ticket. and i have got a ticket for my tinted windows and a tinted LC plate cover.

so Adam62083 is right except on the red or amber coming from the back of the car and the reason is back up lights

so technically you could run a red neon around the plate, i dont see why not. tie it into your brake lights so it gets brighter whenu hit the brakes. also a good way to get around blackout laws since u have to have "either a red light or a red reflective material" visable at all times. when I had my blackouts on i just ran the lights all the time so u could always see red, but one of the cops i work with at the airport said technically the 3rd brake light counts as red reflective/red light so u can get around blackout laws. now to figure out a way around tinted license plate covers...........

Just to sooth the cop paranoia that seems to show up in posts like this, you can't be nailed for asking a question about laws. Cops and other legal civil servants are required to provide accurate answers or means of obtaining accurate answers to all legal questions. You can be nailed however by incriminating yourself. So if you ever want to know what is road legal, just go to the police station or call up a non-emergency info number to ask the question.

Thats odd, I was just at a car show and the cops drove through several times and kids had their neons on and there strobs, and the cops never wrote any tickets.

Like I said, check your local laws, there is no federal law that says its illegal period everywhere.

But no there is no point aruging with you idiots because you insist you are correct.

I'm not saying they are or aren't illegal, just that laws vary from location to location.

But hey, Don't argue with a moron, they just bring you down to thier level and beat you with their experince.

Read the fine print people, most things like that say "For off-road use only" Check for that and you'll be all set. Neon legal while driving, LOL. Well I guess if you got a big yard you can drive with them on

If you read the fine print on the packages that the neons come in, same thing for black outs and anything of that sort it says "For use in off road vehicle only" that is why they can sell them in stores but are illegal to have on your car while your driving

Unforgiven, you have taken my words out of context. However I will cede that I was not clear enough, I am not wrong. While you are operating your vehicle on public roadways, it is illegal for them to be on. When you are at a car show, and the car is parked, you can do whatever the hell you want.
