Painting; Sand or Not Between Coats

I'm a guitarist,.....not a painter.

After the primer & all, do I sand between coats or just layer on the coats?

The hall has me on vacation for 4 months now & after a couple of spray cans of this black acrylic lacquer right over the Van Nuys quality, clear coat peelin', (it does look alot better, it was that bad),
I'm a little surprised of my technique & now, bordom has set in & I get thinking, "if I sand down the peelin', primer",.........

I don't care if Maco can do a better job, I've got gear to buy!!!

I heard sanding between coats is the best.. I think it makes the paint stick better also.
