Same reason a bunch of people on this site and others have LCD screens in their cars and do/want playstation in there. Just to have fun and be different.

Umm, I dunno... I guess it would be cool if you had an annoying little kid in the front seat and needed to distract them. But, to me its a waste of money, all you'd need would be a hammer to get them to shut up. :sillylol: :sillylol:

Well I never said "everyone" had one, there are a few, some are in the radios spot, some flip out.
Its fun because it is different. If I am on long trips, which I do go on with my car, my friends and/or girlfriend can watch a DVD or a play a game to pass the time. If I am waiting for someone somwhere I can play a game. Just something different, we can tell you dont like it, no need to dwell on it.

I'm a fan of it, but I'd like to do it with a pioneer headset that way I don't have a constant LCD screen doing nothing if no one is doing anything with it. But I would agree, I certainly wished I had one when I went to florida. Would have been nice to watch a DVD. (I wasn't driving)

If I am not mistaken, isnt it illegal to have them on while the car is driving?
To me I see it as a hazard. Some time one of your friends is going to be playing some game and youre going to be distracted by him. Youre going to pop in some movie sometime and be distracted, even if youre "friend" is watching it on the long drive. And dont pretend that you wont.
If I was involved in an accident with you, I would claim that thing was on when you hit me and sue your *** off for negligence. I'm sure it would hold up in court. Something to think about.

Being distracted... that's your case against LCD screens?
What about cell phones, people smoking, Kids, G/f, Random acts of weird ****...
Lets worry about banning the above before we worry about someone watching a DVD in our car.

Not sure about other places but a lot of my friends are cops around here and they all said there is no law against them,
and PS2 has a master switch on the back besides the regular power switch on front so if the master is off and I never pop my hatch there is proof if I am in an accident that it wasnt on.
and yeah if a movie is on I might glance over every once in a while, but I'd mostly listen to it. I am very cautious with my car, I would not watch the movie/game as I was driving.

Forget them, that is tight. I wonder how hard it would be to hook up a laptop to it so you could have like a homemade nav system.
For that matter, does anyone make an aftermarket nav system?

In many areas cell phones ARE illegal. I dont know what you mean by g/f, a girl sitting in my car isnt a distraction if she is involved with me or not. Smoking? come on. Kids should be in their child seats. If yours cant behave, then you need to have a talk with them. As for "random acts of weird ****"...I dont know whats going on in YOUR car, but apparently its not the same as mine.
#16
Look the point I am trying to make here isnt flaming you. I'm just saying there are more important things going on outside the car that you need to pay more attention to than the things inside the car. And a LCD screen playing the fast and the furious isnt going to help that any.
I have a pet peeve against people who dont pay attention while they drive. I hate people who talk on cellphones while they drive, unless they are using a headset or a speakerphone, which is fine because they can still focus on the road and not holding the phone just right so that their neck doesnt hurt.

Wow, your not giving up. I tried to show a point by saying your either way to up tight, or your over reacting. (would point to the second case)
Cell phones AREN'T illegal in many areas as well. I guess we better start quickly.
Quickly now 2-10 position state at roads at all time, do not look towards wife/girlfriend while driving. Simply state straight and talk when on straights.
Smoking... come on. You don't think people take their eyes off when grabbing something, reaching for the ashtray or something of that nature. If you can worry about a LCD screen, then you can worry about that.
No Kids, but do you think people do have problems with kids. I do believe so. I guess we should ban those too.
Random acts... not in my car. Around you, while driving. May it be a ***** that just makes you wonder what happened, or if it's a blown 67 camaro driving beside you. Things distract you.
It's simple, if your going to complain about something as small as a LCD screen causing wrecks, then why not worry about all the other things that can cause wrecks. As stated above, your either way to uptight, or you over reacting on something as little as this. I could see your point if you told him you just didn't like them.

you'v never eaten in your car, you'v never had a drink in your car, Never a cell phone, or a passenger with one. What about a girlfriend who wants to do you a favor. A roudy friend, and I bet you never changed a CD or reached for anything in the back seat.
you could spill your food, lid come off your drink, cell phone ring, you could pay attention to a passengers conversation, welllll...we wont say more about what the g/f is doing , a friend could bump you, and when you take your eyes off the road to reach for your CD in the back seat and the sun reflects off of the one side in your eye.
so I guess I should sell my cell phone, take out my CD player...regular FM radio too (dont wanna change stations), break up with my girlfriend, ignore my friends, and never eat or drink in my car too.

I'm not trying to flame you, but I do believe you are over reacting. I get pissed when someone doesn't drive right either, but as everyone knows.... **** happens. You can't control everything. I could understand if this was a major cause of wrecks or something.

that last reply was more as a joke, Im not trying to start a flame war with you. I understand you dont like them because they are a distraction, but that is up to the driver, not the LCD screen. I see your point but I also see the many more distractions on the road every second the car is out there. Hope there is no hard feelings.
#21
Both of you entirely missed the point.
Everyone knows accidents are the result of many different things occuring at one time.
I am trying to say that adding a LCD screen to your car is just making it worse. Im not saying your going to wreck your car, hell you may never wreck a car in your life. But its not going to help you avoid any, its only going to make it worse.

i think it looks awsome!! how long did it take u to install that? great idea for music too.
as far as the distraction, i agree it may be a distraction but if your a responsible enough driver im sure you would not devote most of your attention to the tv, it would be on the road ahead. like when your talking to someone... you occasionally look over to face them while there talking... it would be no diffrent than that.
i think it would be especially good for when you a bit early when picking someone up, play a little PS2 or watch a movie while your waiting.
PS: i would paint the outer trim of the tv (where the bolts/screws are) black so the screws dont stand out as much.. just my opinion
also, you guys are talking about distractions.. what about the guy thats shooting bullet holes under his dash!! now ill agree that might be a distraction you would want to get rid of.

You're a BALLER.
I love it, just wish I could afford something like that. For now on the long trip to college and if my GF is driving, I just turn on the laptop and play a game.

Didnt take too long to install, just had to hook up the inverter, just like an amp, then plug the playstation 2 into it, then run the audio/video wires to the radio and screen. to mount the screen in the dash I just used a dremel with the cut off wheel to cut out a square the rite size.
as far as painting the bracket, I was gonna do that, but now Im just gonna get some ABS Plastic and make a trim ring for the sides.
heres another pic.

I think it looks great, is innovative, and shows a lot of skill. I once read that "hot rodding" was all in the details and I couldn't agree more. Does anyone really need an LCD, a frenched antenna, shaved door handles, 4th gen consoles, LED taillights, different gfx, a V8 in an Astro or custom paint? Most likely not, but all of these customizations reflect the dedication of their respective owners to their hobby and their attention to detail. I personally admire those on the boards who have a "vision" of what they want their cars to look like or perform like and work toward that end (more so if the work is done themselves). I also like the idea of retrofitting modern ideas into older cars. Just because the technology wasn't available or the "idea" hadn't been thought up when our cars were new, doesn't mean we have to go without.
Can it be distracting? I am sure it can be, but a cowl hood can obstruct your field of vision, so can a notchback. That is not the point. The point is everyone should be encouraged to show a little creativity and pay attention to the details.
If someone asks for an opinion, then fine, say you hate it or like it, but to berate someone for doing something you wouldn't do is just wrong.

Man you are posting this mod everywhere! Looks tight Bro :hail: As far as distractions go,I will not post paragraphs on what should be done or not be done inside your car. Just be responsible and cautious my friend and pay little attention to me passing you as you watch Shrek take a mud shower! :sillylol:

86FYRBIRD,
that looks cool as hell. It fills in that big empty space in our dashes. most people who dont like them, just dont like them because they cant afford them. jealousy is a b!tch. lookin good man. I also like to go on some pretty long road trips and stuff with a freind in my car or something. It would be pretty cool just to let them watch a dvd or play grand theft auto or something. I dunno, maybe when im done p!ssing all of my money away on going faster ill get one too

Hey Adam, why don't u just shut ur mouth? if u don't like it than don't waste your time complaining like anyone cares about your opinion...86firebird has the sweetest car on thirdgen probly better than ur car so jsut drop it .........by the way 86 your car is as cool as all hell man .....the dvd screen looks awesome and your interior is great keep ie up.

I think it's cool. I know I'd want one if I had to do anysort of waiting. I grew up near DC, ever heard of the Springfield interchange? The mixing bowl, the beltway? Talk about some serious traffic, I'd love to be able to watch a movie/play a game while in the mess.
As far as distractions go, it's all in how responsible you are, it's not the LCD's fault you take your eyes off the road. I think the only thing that might cause an accident due to the LCD is if I were watching Gone in 60 Seconds or playing Gran Turismo 3 or something. Ever watched Driven, then went out on the road, bad news, now just think if I were watching it WHILE I were driving.......

I think if placed in the right spot a little TV is cool, even better if you pick up a little used laptop or something, and hook it up to the ECM and TV, and you could have a live read out on what your engine is doing.. I likt it..

I like it and I'm adding it to my list of mods for my car. I don't think I like the pouch still being there tho or something. I guess it just looks like it sticks out too far maybe Maybe it's just frame of the LCD. What was the chance of mounting the screen behind the dash and cutting a hole in the dash the size of the screen? But anyway I love it and it looks good so far.

You sir, are an idiot. First of all, he asked for opinions. Second, this isnt about who has the cooler car. Third, if you had not noticed we had already settled our arguement. Try reading the whole post next time Junior.
Oh and the jealousy comment was pretty lame. I cant afford a ferrari that doesnt mean I am going to trash them. And when did I berate 86fyrbrd? I never called him a loser or a *****. You guys are getting really defensive when you shouldnt be.

86FyrBrd just wondering... did you have n-e trouble fitting the screen in there length wise.. meaning was there anything behind the hole you cut in your dash? wires, vent exc..? how far back does it go?
#40
Ok aside from any of the earlier posts I made before, I think aesthetically it would look better without the little pouch thing on the dash next to it. It kinda clashes 80's styling with modern. Maybe something else could go right there I dunno.

I think NightCruzer summed up my opinion very well.
I know I posted this mod alot, I had the project posted before in body, and car audio boards, now that I am done it I jus did this post and slapped a pic in the body board post.
my gf's dad put that sticker on my window so I just took it off and stuck it there, never bothered to take it off.
I want to hook more up to it eventually, it has another video input, so maybe a laptop some day integrated into the car or possibly a TV tuner.
as far as fitting in the dash. There is only about 1/4-1/2" there, luckily LCD's are pretty thin. I could not have gone much bigger because any more towards the left side there is some electronic box thing, I dont know what it is.
I may try and work something up in the future to make my dash look better over there but I kinda like the way the pouch looks for now.
oh yeah THANKS FOR ALL THE COMPLIMENTS EVERYONE!!

Adam, lets see some pics of your car interior. That is a very clean looking 3rd gen interior, much better than my 89RS with 200K!

my interior is just as clean as my exterior. Its completely factory except for a cd player and subs in the back with an amp. I dont have any pics of it because I do not have access to a digital camera, maybe I can get some shots when I am at home this summer.
Thats the outside. And if you guys would ****ing read ALL of my posts, you probably wouldnt be calling me out.

86fyrbird.... very cool mod, not really my thing personally, but if thats what u like great. i myself am not much into apearance mods exterieror or intererior. (already looks awesome) the area i think 3rd gens need the most improvement is performance. I guess what im getting at is... in my opinion there are better places to spend money on a car. and as log as your car is on ther adam, looks great aside from those gastly fogs :lala:
the points of post is for opinions isnt it??
