LED replacement bulbs?

I'm smoking the taillights on my Camaro and wanted to maintain light brightness with something like these style bulbs:

http://www.amazon.com/Signal-Corner-...659830&sr=8-11

They look like they would be way brighter, but does anyone have any experience with these kind of bulbs?

Thanks

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

They aren't brighter and good luck getting that in your taillight housing. They are designed for lights with a removable lens.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

I would see what superbrightleds.com has to offer.

You can't slap a forward facing LED bulb in your tails because they have a much narrower angle than a conventional bulb.

The taillights were designed to reflect the light internally for a uniform look and it would turn out like crap.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

Those will give you a hot spot at the center of the lens mostly because they don't use the reflector. V-Star has a design the fills out the lens much more, and uses the reflector, but they cost $50 per pair. I have a set in my brake/tail lights and they work great. BTW, my lenses are lightly smoked too.

The link below is for amber turn signal lights, I couldn't find the red 1157 which I have on the site.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

Thanks for the responses, do you think something more like this (maybe not this exact one but this style) would work better and get the job done?

http://www.amazon.com/Automotive-Bay...819691&sr=8-13

It seems it would be better than just the forward facing leds, but its not quite as crazy as the ones suggested by Al Hasse.

I used to have some similar to that, but different type of LED (probably not as bright as the SMD type you linked). They didn't do much more than just light up the center of the lens. I broke one of those V-Stars that I linked (had replaced under warranty) and the arms wouldn't light up, and just the body of that piece (similar to your linked example) did a wonderful job of filling the lens. For the price, I think $32 per pair, seems to be reasonable enough to give them a try, but I'd only do one set at a time to see how I liked the performance.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

Buy off eBay, about one tenth the price. I have that style in my 3rd brake light and in my side markers and tail lights with the 194 type bulb. They look great and are plenty bright. I paid less for all of mine then that single light you listed. Also, get the right color, thy offer them in white, amber and red. The white looks horrible behind a red or amber lenses.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

Ok thanks for all the responses I think I know what to do now! But just to be extra sure the outer red brake lights are 1157, the inner amber lights are 2057, and the reverse lights are 1156 correct? Oddly enough I couldn't find that information 100% anywhere

Look in the owners manual. Mine has an entire page devoted to every single bulb used in my '86.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

Here are my blacked out tails with LED bulbs if anyone looks for reference, I think they look pretty good. But I need to add a resistor to the turn signal bulbs because the LED ones are too high of resistance. Anyway here are some pictures.

According to my owners manual, they are all 2057 for brake/tail and turn signal bulbs, backup lights are 1156 and the side markers are 194. 1157 LED replacements will work for the 2057.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

It doesn't look that bad. Pics are hard to tell by. Is that just tail lights lit or is that brake lights lit, too?

And FYI, any one can go to Sylvania.com and look up the bulbs used in any car. Here's the link for all the bulbs used in a 1986 Camaro.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

That's with brake lights, here's the tails without depressing the brake. Also yea its 2057 brake, 2057 turn, 1156 reverse, 194 side and plate.

Re: LED replacement bulbs?

They are brighter, probably not as bright as those fancy lights, but on a budget its a good solution
