Version II GTA Pinewood Derby Car..need your input!

So, I finish roughing out V2 tonight with the correct longer nose. Wheelbase still in scout spec, just shifted the car forward via gluing another block of wood on the front.
Would greatly appreciate your input on which car we should use. Will probably take both, with working driving and tail lights. But you guys know our 3rd gens better than anyone, I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Both still have to be finish sanded..

Heres V1

Heres V2

Hey Bryan,

Beautiful work, but as a former Scout master and father of an Eagle Scout, who is this for? You.....or your son?

V2, no doubt. I always thought the nose looked real stubby on V1, but with the wood limitations I knew it wasn't built that way by choice.

V2 looks good!

Thanks Hal,
For my 7yo, he will be doing the finish sanding and assisting on lighting. Complete team effort. My current GTA is my 17th TA and my son has been a TZ guy since birth. When the derby was brought up, his first question was can we build the GTA..

Thanks Blackenedbird, Thought the same thing myself, the only downside now is the rear wheels are a little off. But I can live with it and its legal for PWD... To me the front is 200% better. Will look really sweet with the LED driving lights in

Re: Version II GTA Pinewood Derby Car..need your input!

Looks good, but there may be an issue...

Hal, maybe you can confirm this for me, but I always thought that you had to use the original length of the original block and not exceed those limits? The only PWD rules I know for certain are the wheelbase MUST be the same as on the original block and the whole model cannot exceed 5 ounces including paint and decals (this is coming from a guy who placed 2nd 2 years in a row and 3rd the third year among the whole pack). I know the weight rule because I got caught by it a couple of times . Had to make last minute adjustments, shaving off parts of the block...

Might want to double-check your pack's rules for the overall dimensions of the finished car before you get to the race and they disqualify you for being over-length.

Re: Version II GTA Pinewood Derby Car..need your input!

Thanks Maverick,

The car is just under the 7" length rule, and 2 7/16" wide, and less than the mandatory 3" high. In full spec. I am utilizing the scout spec axle slots, I just moved the car forward with an additional block of wood and shortened the rear of the car.

Haven't checked yet, but weight will not be an issue.

The best thing I can say about that is you will want the car to be as close to the weight limit as possible (about 4.5 to 4.75 ounces finished). If you can find a hobby shop that carries it, PineCar produces sets of round bar and flat bar adjustable weights. The weights can be broken off and added or subtracted as necessary. You will want to hollow out part of the bottom of the car and put the flat weights down underneath, and then seal them in with glue and "plastic wood". Also, use powdered graphite lubricant on the nails holding the wheels onto the body before you install the wheels to help things a bit. Remember, the heavier the car, the faster it is, provided the weight is distributed evenly between front and rear.

:edit: I see you did add wood to the outside to form the outer body shape, so this is irrelevant...

I hope you'll do pretty well... I used to just chuck the block in the kit and use PineCar pre-cut bodies, sticking the PWD wheels and axle nails in the wheel cuts. I used to have about 2-3 of my old cars around, but I threw them out not too long ago.

:another edit: Must have been that my pack was rather stingy on the rules governing the overall dimensions of the car . I wish, however, that they had given me my rightful place in my final race (I KNOW I finished second in the last race, NOT third! And no, they didn't have the electronic scoring).

Version 1--

If you remove the power bulge & mod the rear spoiler, is that a 5gen Camaro?

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed... Maybe he should hold onto that body for next year . Of course, it will need some mods to make it more like the new Camaro...

GTA with a Formula hood?

Looks like you cut a groove for the nose to fender line, but no groove for the fender to door seam or door to quarter panel seam?

Re: Version II GTA Pinewood Derby Car..need your input!

Just like mine...always liked the power buldge on the thirdgens, been running one on mine for a few years now..

As far as the lines, the front line is another block of wood I had to add in order to get the right nose look. I thought about doing doors and ground effect lines, but didn't... what surprised me the the PPG paint really brought out the glue lines which were sanded with 600 and 1000 grit...

Oh well, she'll be fast...

Just completed the Tiger Pack youth races...First place in design, third fastest out of 21 cars... Going to district races next in March. Really great experience with my son...Had a blast!
I get to race my "outlaw" car this afternoon.
