New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
Since I have three extra wheels I am just trying this out to see if I like it. Ita called plasti-dip and it's like a rubbery paint that comes in various colors. If you decide you don't like it, it simply peels off like a latex glove.
I'm toying with the idea of doing this to all my wheels. Or maybe I'll tape them off and just coat the spokes and leave the rim chrome.
It was still wet in the photo, it dries a little more flat/matte than this. I'll update when it's dry...
This is a chrome wheel by the way...

It says it doesn't chip or flake. And it's definitely thick and durable so I don't see any issues with it. I've seen people on other sites use this stuff and have very positive feedback on it.

pretty cool. I like the idea that it can just peel off to change colors.

Re: New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
I have used plastic dip on some of my tools a while back. Good stuff, however, I have a hard time believing that one can simply peel it off. This stuff is literally glued to my tools. Then again it was applied to steel versus chrome which is a much slicker surface so maybe.

Re: New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
I saw a video on YouTube of a guy peeling it off a clearcoated wheel and it looked sooo easy. I would assume it would be just as easy if not more so with chrome.

You should definitely go white. Your car would pop with white wheels

Seriously? Dipping your wheels in cheap, crappy looking plastic goop?
It matters not that it can peel off, it looks like crap, and our cars deserve better.
If you want black wheels, buy black wheels, or powder coat the wheels.
Add this to the long list of heinous "mods" thirdgens suffer.

This is a great way to cheaply experiment with wheel colors! I like it Nick, and if it works take the next steps.

This not just a "third gen" mod... I have seen this used on VERY high end pro-touring cars to see if they liked the look of a black wheel before investing in stripping and painting/powdering expensive wheels.

Anything is better than chrome.
Kind of look like a ultra dark grey. Would be cool to see them sitting next to the car to get an idea of how well they go with your blue.

To me its just not worth it to take the tires off, peel the goop off, re-apply, and then put the tires back.
For all of that I would much rather have a permanent coat. Powder coating is really the only way I would every go.
If your using it just for mock-up so you don't ruin a wheel, that seems fine. After that I would powdercoat them the same color, the right way.

What kind of surface prep is needed for that stuff? Not just on wheels, but on surfaces in general.

Yes and no, I would assume you don't have to take the tires off for a simple mock up of color with this platikote stuff. If you are expecting it to last, and to be done right, tires will need to come off. Otherwise the area around the outside of the rim and bead will be a weak link.

Re: New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
I wonder if a tire machine would rub off the Plast Dip, as it spun to mount the tire. Seems like those machines rub the outer surface some & just use a plastic cover to protect the metal of a wheel. But how would the plastic cover interact with the rubber of the Plasti Dip?

if a tire machine can scuff the chrome its obviously going to tear off something that can be peeled off.
i think this is a good idea for sure though. those black z06's would look badass on the vert

Re: New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
every bit of dirt and debris sticks to it. Deff. a PITA.
I did some 1g eagle talon interior plastics with the stuff. Dusty fingers leave marks. Its a rough plastic textured surface when dry. Looks good , scuffs easy. overall id say for interior rear plastics it was a good idea. for rims Id do it just to see if i like the black texture look. If i did the stuff comes off easy and would powder coat them in mini texture flat black.
I deff. want to see how long it last on a set of rims. Might try it myself.

Re: New possible look? Plasti-Dip on my chrome Z06's
i remember seeing lots of talk of using this stuff on the g8 kidney grilles and there was a lot of positive feedback. if it can stand up to the debris a grille's gotta deal with, I think the wheels should be ok. only thing I can see possibly causing an issue with durability is the heat. what's this stuff rated to? brakes can get warm and your wheels are their heatsink

I wish the black wheel epidemic would end. It down plays the wheel and the car.

There's someone on f150forum.com that used this on his whole truck, including wheels. Truck looked awesome when it was done. I've been thinking about painting my wheels with it. Always wondered what my white Formula would look like with black wheels.

I generally hate black wheels, some can look okay though. Badnblak's car looks great.
91-92 16inch wheels black is barfworthy for instance. I think black C5 Z06 wheels are... tolerable at best. Competition Gray is the only color those wheels should be, IMO. But that's just how I roll - that's my vision. Everyone is entitled to their own.

I can't stand competition gray z06's haha. I much prefer chrome on just about everything except for a few wheels that look good in black
