Sup guys. I saw a brake light design on a auction site but I figured that it cant be too hard to make the design. So what do you think guys?

I respect your opinion, but to me, its high and it is seperated from the other brake lights which makes it distinct and unique from all the other 3rd Gens. I love it. High on top and in the center is the way to go, just like a first place winner in the Olympics. But like you said, everyone has their opinion.

wow that is cool. I thought you were asking about a spot to put it. my 3rd brake light doesnt work, I want to go 5 inch hawks spoiler which doesnt have one. I guess i'll have to upgrade to a top brake light like this.

Cool. But be careful. There are a lot of 86 F-body owners out there that take offense because of thier pride level. Went I see a CHML (Center High Mount Light) 86 F-Body like mine, I know that its a 86. But the choice is yours. Good luck finding a 86 hatch glass. They are hard to find because they are strictly made for the 86 year.

Re: TO ALL 1986 F-Bodies..3rd Brake Light Mod
well it does stick out a bit but what is the total displacement area that actually affects the flow of air over the roof? Probably a total of 80-120 square inches. But the total area is more aerodynamic unlike the lower valance that pushes air into the radiator. Now that there my friend is a problem that cant be avoided if you live where I live, lower Mohave Desert.

Re: TO ALL 1986 F-Bodies..3rd Brake Light Mod
Well the other day I was driving and the person in front of me had a light up license plate frame with red led's in it. And it got me thinking...If I wire it to my brake lights how tacky would that be? and would that conform to laws for 3rd brake light?

UUUmmm.Sounds illegal..... I wouldnt try it. But it may suit the Camaro. The best way to find out is to try it. If you do try it, I wanna see pictures or even a video.

Everyone has their opinion, which is good.
Mine is that a light in that location by default reads "TAXI", even if taxi is spelled I - R - O - C...
To prevent the taxi-effect, I personally would not use letters, but instead maybe a chevy logo instead.
Chevy logo´s by default do not spell "TAXI"

Re: TO ALL 1986 F-Bodies..3rd Brake Light Mod
Being an 86 it was easy to skirt the 3rd brake light laws with mine, I just removed it and put a sticker over the holes in the glass.
Out of sight, out of mind. And being that it was the first year and cops have seen plent of 82-85 without it, no one noticed.
Even easier to to lose with my notch now
Though my rear tach could be called a 3rd brake light, nearly started that way as I first was going to try and mout it inside the stock 3rd brake light.
It then went under the stock wing like a 3rd brake light and now in the center tail panel with the notch.

I was just thinking it's a bunch of LED's around the license plate. It doesnt impede the plate at all. I would still have the regular license plate lights...I am going to look into this.

Most kits had that option, but most didn't chose red, which was the only legal color. Still got an unused blue one and some blue light up skull wiper squirters.
But I knew better then to put blue lights on my car

Does anyone know how to keep plastic from deteriorating or dry rotting?

LIke a light up neon license plate frame that works with the brakes?

I think it looks ok, the only thing I would say is that it says IROC -Z in about a million places anyway on our cars, not sure it needs another. Just my 2 cents.

In 88 or 89 IROC's, the rear bumper becan to have the "IROC-Z" bumper logo. On our 86's, our rear bumpers have the Z28 logo. Having one more logo doesn't hurt IMHO.

Another option - if you can get the lettering correct in your computer, you can just create a pdf doc (Bullzip from download.com) with the clear letter on black background, and email it to your local Staples or Office Depot, and they can print out a transperancy for under $5 - then stick it in.

The black transperancies work quite well actually! I had my shifter plate redone at a local sign shop years ago (before OD/Staples did such things), and it blocks all the light except for the PRNDD21 lettering on that.
I got to hand it to ya for taking the time to cut all that out by hand!

Thanks for the compliment man. They can make shifter plates? wow. Has the shifter plate outlasted the elements such as cold winters and hot summers? I ask because there are some plastics that break in time because of UV light exposure (the sun). Kind of like a rubber band that has been left out in the sun, when you stretch it it breaks.

Re: TO ALL 1986 F-Bodies..3rd Brake Light Mod
I just had the transperancy made, and fitted it in the shifter plate. 3+ years old, no issues. Of course my car stays covered unless I'm driving it, and I keep sun shades in the windshield and point car towards the sun, so never gets much UV exposure.

Most times if your set up to print transparencies, you got a printer made for that with ink just for that.
Now if they use a reg printer with some reg paper ink, that’s a whole diff can oh worms, yet it can do a good job if you set it up right. I have done that to make a T-shirt silk screen [ever watch a YUDU infomercial, worth it for the $75 I paid] and it has to black out well so the screen is shot right, parts not covered in black turn hard in the light, parts covered in black don't and wash away. And its like a scanner super bright light, so it has to block well.

This thread has gone from my project to Staples making transparencies. I like this thread. So how did you get this design for your shifter plate? Did you make the design on your own?

You can poke around this folder
http://viragotech.com/hurstv2/
When I made a Hurst inlay for my shifter.
Only trick was getting it sized right and letters spaced right to line up with the shifter. Do several test prints on paper before you goto plastic.

When you buy the housing, make sure to get the 2 bolts that go through the hatch glass.
