Want to do flat black/semi gloss paint for my 89 formula
The clear coat on my car is pretty rough in spots and is just getting worse. I put a pic in, the picture makes the spots look good but in person its pretty bad. The clear coat is also coming apart in other parts of the car. I like the flat look. I was wondering what the difference between flat black and semi gloss is. Also any tips on painting the car? I do have a compressor so i could rent a paint gun, im not sure I really want to use spray paint. Any tips suggestions opinions? Also the roof of the car is very dull

a lot of people say "flat black" when they actually want "Satin Black".. has a slight sheen to the color instead of looking like very dull chalk board. check out this picture of a 69 SS in satin black, and a 68 in satin black, you can see the sheen on the side panels
this 70 is in FLAT black.. no sheen
this 70 is in FLAT black.. no sheen

I love the look of gloss black stripes (or bird in your case) with satin black. Just a thought

The satin black loooks great. Kind of reminds me how my hood looked when I first put the black epoxy primer on it. After a year it started chalking up and wiping off so I gloss blacked the hood.

tips? remind the painter over and OVER that you want the satin look, take some pics in with you just so he knows what he is doing and the look you want. They basically take a normal black paint and add reducer..

The pics make it look better it looks pretty bad in person. Its ashame because its only a few spots but BIG spots lol. The clear coat is starting to fall apart on the passenger side now too :/ someone did a extremely cheap paintjob on it. Only thing ive done is sand down the roof of my 69 ambo and prime it with spray primer so not really any experience there haha :/ Thanks! its extremely clean except the paint. bought it with 67k original miles!

There is a satin clear coat on the market now that will last a LOT longer. You would probably have to specificly request it tho.

Yep... this is the route I would go. If the base color on your paint is good, I would think a shop could rough up the existing and shoot satin all over. They would have to get rid of any peeling or flaking old clear or it would cause the new top coat problems. But yes I have heard over and over about satin clears. I have some thoughts to do this on a black car in the future... topping it with gloss stripes or accents. I love the satin look. Flat is too aged primer looking tho. Satin looks like a car in base coat. I loved the bird in base before the clear was laid...
