What is this thing and can it be removed?
Hi everyone.
Don't know if that's the right place for that question but here it goes.
What is the part circled on the pic? What is its role? Where those two hoses connect to? and Where small line connects to? Can it be removed altogether? Advantages/Disadvantages of removing it?
I'm cleaning engine bay and it looks awful.
For the records I removed A/C and A.I.R. system long ago (don't need it in Europe).
I would do a search for it but don't know what it's called.
BTW the car is 1991 Z28 305
Thanks in advance for answers.

heater valve, it stops hot coolant from flowing through the heater core w/ the heater set to off or AC on. It makes the AC more efficient. My 88 non AC doesn't have one, yes it can be removed. You can also keep it and relocate it.
Here's a pic of my white 88 w/ no heater valve and my red 87 converted to ac delete and the valve relocated:
the non ac one, it has that 90 deg tube where the other has the valve. The other line runs directly to the KC4 oil cooler, if you don't have it, it goes to the rad
it's between the inner fender and the ac delete box
the small line is a vac line, controlled by your heater controls.

it is the heater control valve. vacuum controlled (little rubber hose on top). bottom coolant hose goes to the heater core. top hose goes to the coolant pipe on the passenger side fraim rail. right coolant hose goes to the intake manifold base.
can it be removed, yes. but theres no point unless its broken, or you dont want heat. you could just reroute the hoses and plumb it out of the system. that whole system covers the heat and engine oil cooler. and it looks like you doint have the oil cooler. so yes you could tidy it up a bit and reroute the hoses....

with it removed you still have heat. It does not interfere with the functionality of the heater. It's only used to shut down hot coolant flow when the heater is off or the AC on so you are not trying to cool down a hot heater core. NON AC cars don't even have one. The heater core always sees hot coolant flow with the valve removed.

Thanks for the info guys. So I would remove it, do I need to plug some holes? What to do with vac line?

plug the vac line otherwise w/ the heater controls set to off or AC you will have a vac leak. If it were me, I'd keep it and reposition it. In the summer w/ the heater set to cold it won't heat up the interior as bad from the hot heater core.

One more questions guys...
If I will decide to remove it I know I need to plug the hoses that go to the heater box and the vacuum line, but what to do with the hose that goes into throttle body? Should I plug the TB or just leave it open?

Re: What is this thing and can it be removed?
if you remove it you won't have to remove the hoses to the heater core. If you do that you won't have a heater. If you remove the hot water vale there's always hot coolant circulating through the core, that's all. might not be a bad thing to have a working heater in Schotland.
The throttle body hose, well it depends if you want to retain the coolant flow through the TB or not.

Re: What is this thing and can it be removed?
Thanks for that. I will probably run the hose straight from the heater to the engine block... Can that be done?
Can you guys tell me which way the coolant flows? Is it from the radiator to the heater core, from there to heater valve, from there to throttle body and from TB to the engine? Is that right? How it goes back to the radiator? Through lower radiator hose?
So if that's the right way of coolant flow can I remove heater valve and by-pass TB and go straight from the heater core back to the engine?
Can you confirm the flow of coolant for me using this pic? I marked it (very badly) how I think it flows which is probably wrong

Thanks in advance.
