summit paint?

I was wondering how good the summit paint is, i really like the color bomber blue metallic, and no one else really makes a similar color.its 150$ a gallon and a single stage paint so i think i will have more than enough. I really dont know about duplicolor because i tried to use one of there primers and it didn not turn out well, but i dont know how there paint is.

Re: summit paint?

Summit paint or duplicolor? I heard good things about Summit Paint but Duplicolors paint line mainly the ''Paint shop'' line is horrible.

What's so bad about the "Paint Shop" by DupliColor? My buddy's about to paint his Fiero GT in a few weeks, with the Gloss Red and the Metallic Clear Coat.

Re: summit paint?

That paintshop stuff is lacquer. It is more of a semi gloss, even with the clear it isn't that great. You would be way better off with the summit stuff, or even ppg, napa etc.. Basecoat and clear is the only way to go.

Stop being cheap and spend a bit more and get better stuff that will look and last longer.

Re: summit paint?

Yeah I painted a tool chest with duplicolor's paint shop just to get a feel for it... It's so shitty, no gloss, doesn't buff up well either, ohh and if you think a few coats will cover you're kidding yourself, the way you can tell a good paint is by how well it covers (because the less coats it takes, the more pigment is in the paint) and duplicolor hardly has any. 60 bucks for a quart or already thinned primer, base and clear. What a joke, it would cost 240 bucks to paint a camro the right way with this stuff. I have heard great stuff about the summint paint though, kevin tetz showed a really neat way to paint a front fender so that it has a extremly high gloss look, and for the demonstration he used summit paint. Turned out quite nice. However I belive somone makes summit paint for them, read around on google, and it'll tell you what line summit paint really is, you can buy it cheaper from the people summit buys if from than summit because there's no middle man (summit).

Good Luck, DacMan

Re: summit paint?

i used duplicolor to primer my car and i got as far as the hood and the whole quart was gone one coat not even that really, and it looked terrible. i bought the nappa stuff the next day and it worked fine. that's why im wondering if duplicolors paint is as good as their primer. I saw the summit paint is 150$ but you get a whole gallon of it.

Re: summit paint?

There is a company on ebay that sells some nice paint cheap.

paintforcars or something is their name, have to look it up.

under $50 a gallon, I was thrilled with it, n they got many years of happy ebay customers.

Re: summit paint?

I bought Summit Gloss Black paint, With the activator and reducer. I haven't finished the body work yet on my car so I haven't used it but I think it was like 130$ and makes 5 quarts. I also like the fact its single stage. I'll post many pictures when its all done. I have used the Dupli-color primer, it doesn't cover well. I sprayed the whole quart on just my hood. How much was the napa stuff? 25$ for a quart that wont last is alot for me.

I used their black 1 stage enamel. didn't even use a flex agent for the bumper and its been fine many years later. [Had rained when I took them pics.]

it is around 25 a quart so its not bad, it only took 2 quarts of the napa stuff to cover my whole car with 3 coats the napa stuff has to be reduced which isn't hard so i ended up with 4 quarts to spray, and it turned out great

Re: summit paint?

Wow, i'm definitely going to tell my buddy about how brutal the DupliColor is. He's on a budget, doing all the work himself, so i'll hit him up with that eBay link, hopefully he can find a color that he likes.
*He likes the glossy red, and he wants to maintain his silver two tone gfx.

Re: summit paint?

I was curious about summit paint as well, too bad almost most of the people in this post are talking about other brands. Anyone else have any info on summit brand paint? ie shooting it or how well it holds up?
Thanks,
Kory

Re: summit paint?

I havent tried summit, but the Eastwood stuff is pretty decent. If your looking for economy go with either the Napa Naason Brand or PPG Omni. There is also an Omni Plus and the PPG Platnium dealers have a line called shop line and shop line plus. I bought some of the clear and haven't used it yet but it's supposed to be better than omni, I hate omni clear. Dupont has an economy brand, but personally I don't like to spray dupont, I never get good color matches with it. The Napa or Omni would be the best choices probably around 300 bucks, but if you use the shop line stuff you are looking at around 200 bucks. Another thing to think about is with lacquer then when you repaint the car to do it right all of the lacquer needs to be sanded away. I recently done some touch up work for a customer and used omni plus, it's pretty decent stuff.
