Good starting painting gun?

So after learning how to sand and prep in general. I think I have what it takes to learn how to paint. I have been talking to my neighbor who does it for a living and says with patience and decent prep it should turn out decent.

Well as for prep I am almost done and should be done in a week. That leaves me to choose a decent starter spray gun for the job. I will be trying to or wanting to paint the whole car. So what paint gun should I pick up? My budget is strict but I can make exceptions to decent deals or guns that will help me out more later on as I learn better.

Also, Where is a decent place to order paint? I plan or have choosen to paint the car either White or Silver (Gunmetal) which is still undecided.

As for my compressor, is a Coleman 25 Gallon compressor. I will get better specs of it today but I can easily borrow a bigger better one if needed.

I use a Devilbiss Finishline 3 gun and like it alot. It was priced well and came with 3 different size fluid tips. It was the first HVLP gun I used and felt it was pretty easy to adjust and get good results from. Your 25 gallon tank is gonna be really too small to paint a whole car at a time if you use a HVLP gun. You might want to look into a conventinal type gun.

Thats the thing I was thinking about, would it be a problem if I do the car in sections? I will try my best to keep my painting technique similar in every section. If that would be a problem, I can easily get ahold of a bigger/better compressor.

Thanks I will check it out.

Re: Good starting painting gun?

What about these?

I understand the whole meaning, you get what you pay for. Are these any good for the price?

You should do some reading over at hotrodders.com. They have a great paint/body forum with alot of good info. Do some searching there and you will find any info you need.

Re: Good starting painting gun?

Well..I like to use a Sata for base and a Devilbiss for clear.Check out ebay..and checkout the autobody depot...http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/
I dont know whats in your area but I bought a IR gun from tractor supply for $100.Its a decent gun for the $$$.
Yes, you do get what you pay for...sometimes you pay for a name though.I use high end expensive guns cause I am painting 3 cars a day.My spray guns get a lt of abuse and not a lot of time for me to clean them....
It wont be a problem for you to paint the car in sections. It will be a bit of a pita but as long as you are spraing from the same paint can you will be fine. You may waste a little clear though. There are bodyshops that will let you rent booth time....
Summit has urethane paints for a good price.. http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=paint&dds=1
and lastly I dont want to sound like a broken record as I have said this TONS of times on this forum but...KNOWLEGDE IS POWER!!!! If you can afford to buy an insrtuctional dvd please make the investment!
