Flat black thirdgens
Does anyone have a pic of a clean flat or semi gloss third gen. Not a cheap quick rattle can job im looking for one that looks good. Im thinking of doing mine flat or matte black with flat blue stripes up the hood.
Something like this but a thirdgen

Me too, whenever I see a flat black car, I always think hey, I guess they couldn't afford to paint it..

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Maybe some people don't have the money to paint it or MAYBE we'd just rather spend it on the motor where it counts. Mine is satin black rattle can and it came out pretty good. Eventually I will get it painted but right now I'd rather have it be all go and no show...

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Yeah and by prepping I mean just roughed up the original paint with a green scrubby pad.
This is what it looked like when I bought it. I HAD to do something..
After about 4-5 cans of Satin Black

I don't know why people think that a flat black paint job doesn't need clear coat. That's a big mistake and not applying a clear coat is the reason some of these cars look "unfinished." If you want a really good look, you should apply a dull clear coat (not glossy) after the base. Not to mention, it protects the paint and can be buffed.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
There is no clear at all. It looks great in person. This is the 4th time I've done this so I've had time to perfect my rattle can skills.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
i'm torn. i think flat black can look sweet, but it usually has to be on an all go and no show kind of car. otherwise it just looks like you cheaped out when you got to the paintjob. like others have said - no matter what paint you use, you still have to do the body and prep work. that's the major cost of a paint job.
this website has a nice selection of flat paints. they even have a dull clear so you can wash the car and have UV protection.

You painted your entire car with 4-5 cans? How the hell did you do that? I painted mine gloss black with rattle cans, and it took almost 40 cans. And I did not have to paint the front fenders and doors. BTW, I dig the flat black, AAA+++

Re: Flat black thirdgens
I like the flat black when done well as on the Camaro at the top of the page. It has a sinister look to it. If I were to do it I would go with a flat black via spray gun then dull clear coat. Looks a heck of a lot better that way.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Im getting ready to do this, this weekend. What is the best rattle can paint to use? Im thinking of useing a satin black spray paint with no clear.
Would i be better off using a satin black paint or a black primer? Which will come out better and last longer?

I used a Satin black. Krylon indoor/outdoor I think. I tend to think the primer will "last longer" as far as not fade, but I dont think it will look as good.

Please don't go black primer. Its what I used to take care of my body work until I can resand it and apply some better primer and it is really bad. It will fade, scratch and come off with normal use. This was in a garage I can't imagine how long it will last outside.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Flat black can look really, really good if it's on a no bullshit fast car. It needs to look like a well-done track car to pull it off. If I had nice looking 17s on my car and it was lowered another half inch all around, I think it could pull it off.
But basically you need to be able to tell the car is really nice, and that the flat black was an artistic decision and not a financial one.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
See thats what I mean. That to me looks horrible. Either you did not apply it right or the paint is cheap. If I can pick these things up from pictures, I can't imagine how it really looks in person and up close.
Sadly my black primer looked good, enough good to make myself and a few friends like it but it wouldn't last, Also good as in it looked even and couldn't tell it was just rattle can primer.
@Orin, Your job actually looks good and makes me want to see it in person!

To anyone who has done this with rattle cans:
Do you think that wetsanding it after would help "smooth" the surface out, and overall just help it look better?

No offense man but that looks like SHIZZZZ>> with Z. Seriously it cost me 100.00 and a bit of prep work to spray mine in my garage with 3 box fans pulling air out so i can breathe.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Theres tons of rattle canned jobs and they with some work can look good. Take 89frmla350 job and compare it to yours. It might be temp but hell I would rather just leave it in primer and drive another car til I can make up the money for the paint job then have something like that, no offense but just my
Also I would suggest not spending on things not needed from looking at your previous threads and get a decent paint job.

I had the choice to either let it rust, or rattle can it with primer. I chose the latter.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Well then something you did or bought was bad. I did my driver side with Black primer from Rustoleum before I went with better primer and I did not get the results you got.
It might feel like im busting your ***** about it but I am just wondering what made it come out like that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slMlpEqDnGA
Thats the only thing I have showing mine and its an old video, At around 9 seconds you can see how it was. Video Camera makes it look worse than it is, in person its actually pretty even. Downside with it was it was very sensative and would get scratched or marked easily.

Re: Flat black thirdgens
the thing about primer is that its going to be covered eventually, so yeah, its not supposed to look good. I'm with John on this one. I had done ALOT of sanding on my car, for awhile I had 2 different shades of gray primer on. I didnt care cause, who cares, its primer. Hell, I think mine looked worse than that lol.
Anyways, heres 2 more pics of mine. You can see some splotching on the hood and b pillar... I tried catching as much of it as I could. Its not real noticeable, but its there. And there's that spot I apparently missed behind the rear wheel.

My car is primer black, it looks like doo doo now(turned grey) but when I first did it she looked menacing with the black headlight housings. Oh well she's gonna be off to the paint shop soon and will be nice and glossy black again

Re: Flat black thirdgens
Well today I picked up the same paint you used since my uncle wanted to repaint his door handles on his bravada. I was bored and said screw it so I coated the rear gfx peice and see how it turns out, If it turns out ok I might actually go for it. I am gonna get alot of crap from the fam but lets see how it does.
Edit: Well the gfx came out decent so I gave it one more small coat and did a run on my deck lid. I am not gonna get painted til maybe late June, keyword maybe. So lets see if I can get decent results.

I backed out, I figured why waste my hard worked time on my body work to just do a simple thing. It looked good well just the deck lid but I am sticking with my plan and probably just gonna finish it prime it, seal it and cover it til paint money comes in.

how would it turn out if you used a rattle can primer first then go over it again with the krylon indoor/outdoor.
