what you need to do is paint over the amber section with translucent red paint. any kind would work. i actually used a red permanent sharpie marker on a spare lens and it looked just as good. but yea they look a lot better

I know how he did it. I asked him. He painted them Candy Apple Red, the same color as his car. I love that car so much...

yeah, flamin Z is killer, I wouldn't do the clear section red though, you'd get hassled by the cops constantly

No you wouldnt, Id say youd be lucky to even get pulled over, and if you did it very proffesionaly they would have no clue if it was stock or not(not that it even matters)

If you do a good job, the only way they'd know that you don't have reverse lights is if you put it in reverse and they see you backing up with the lights red. Otherwise I doubt they would have a clue. I was thinking about maybe someday making mine all red, getting a new spoiler with third brake light, putting a clear lense on it and hooking it to the reverse lights. Just an idea though.

If you are looking for the paint(transparent candy apple red) find the model section of any store that has them and they should be there. The brand I used is Testor. My tail lights look nice now.

I have been working on doing my lights for months. Its not as easy as you would think if you want a cherry job. I bought a set of light from the junk yard and removed the red sections. I then cut out the amber section out of my own lenses and epoxy'ed the red sections back in. This was of course after endless hours of filing, grinding, etc, to get them to fit in the opening perfectly. I ran into a few problems using two part epoxy so I opted to use plexy-glass cement which looks to be the winner. After all the cut and pasting is done the grid still needs to be sanded down and painted black. And of course at the very end the lenses will be buffed out for a high luster.

If I knew what a pain in the **** this would have been I would have never started. But in the end I think its going to stand out so its worth the effort. Wow... I thought I was the only one that thought the amber was disgusting!

Here is a pic during the ordeal... its still not done.

  • Fast Burn Heads

  • Midrange cam

  • Global West SFC's with custom reinforcements
  • 8 Point Custom Roll bar
  • ILE Brakes
  • Eibach Pro Kit springs
  • Polyuerethane Suspension bushings all around
  • ILE Aluminum Driveshaft
  • Full Autometer Instrumentation (10 guages)
  • Dupont custom pearl paint with flames and 6 ultra-thick clear coats
  • and the list goes on...

that looks good but cant you just paint over the amber?
that is what others have done, and you seriously cut the tail lamps? because i would think that might mess them up.

good idea though but i dont have that much time. i need it to be an after noon project.

and is it gonna be hard to do if the lights are on the car?
or should i take them off? and how hard is that?

Mr. Iroc-Z:
How exactly did you do that? I'm tired of my blackouts trying to come off and honestly I think what you've done to your tail-lights looks way better than any blackouts. Nice car.

Hi Black Widdow,
I took some clear coat and black paint....mixed it....put it in a sprayer....and then I just sprayed the lights. Yeah, I have tail light blackout...this looks much cleaner, and looks stock too!
I can do them for you for about $40-50.

Amrish, I had a hard time taking all that stuff off too when I had to take off my black outs for the state safety check inspection. Since there was all that left over glue and not to mention all the damn waterspots, I used the finest sandpaper i could find, sanded it down and then used a buffer and polished the hell out of it. Came out almost like new. But then I was stupid enough to put the blackouts back on only a few months later. Hope this helps.
