Shaving bumper guards?

I have an 89 Formula and was wondering if i could remove the black guards and some how fill the area. I know i can't use bondo... is there anything i can us that will flex with the plastic? Or will it fall off if i even tap something?

You should get ahold of scauffiel. Im sure he would have some good ideas. He shaved all the seams on his car, including where the plastic front end meets the metal fender. His car is sweeet

those are molded into the bumper, so the only permanent way would be to buy TA bumpers. and since they have ground effects molded into them youd have to buy ground effects for it too. which looks better anyway IMO

Cool, i will track him down then.

I don't want to go with the T/A look. I had one and loved it... but i don't want to change the look of my sleek, light weight Formula.

Thanks all.

I have to agree w/you. The whole GFX thing was cool in the 80s. The reason I like the Formula is because it doesnt look dated, kinda. On newer cars there are almost no GFX. Those that have them, the GFX are very subtle and not "in your face, full out side-skirts" Some younger kids(those who came of age during the SUV craze) are not quite sure what my car is.

interesting take on it. ive noticed that no manufactures are doing GFX, except on special models (old WRX, Evloution VI, civic type R etc) but they still sell GFX for every kind of car and i think a couple side skirts and a lower airdam and rear air deflector look great. and i like how they put em on the racing corvettes and vipers. the ATI Pro-charger camaro has ground effects and looks amazing. but this is my take on it. i know alot of people love the 2nd gen camaros over the 1st gens, which i believe to be insanity.

I do think that the new T/A's have awsome ground effects. They are very in your face and give it a cool f-off attitude. The Formulas are more of a sleeper car, same performance, less eye catching.

There are very few tastefull body kits for imports. They are mostly gawdy and over done.

I just want a cleaner look for my Formula. The arest-me-red colour and black guards are nice, but i think it would look a lot nicer without them. I have thought about putting the banshee nose on, but that would change the styling year and thats not what i want to do.

You could always try painting them, that has crossed my mind before, I know exactly what you mean about the Formula, it looks awesome without ground effects. As long as it has the snowflake polished wheels and Aerowing spoiler. Without ground FX, it looks more rounded, I like that look personally.

To make it one step easier, go find a rear bumper off an 82-84 firebird, they don't have gfx or the 'bumperettes'.

I kinda like the 91-92 Formula/firebird rear bumper because they are more curvy and less straight than the 82-84 bumpers. just my .02

I don't think that they are molded into the bumper.
1) On my bird, I'm sure that I've seen the screws while proding around. I'm not sure if you have to remove the front or rear pieces before you can remove the bumperettes.
2) I've seen a pic with the bumperettes removed.

I have on there a new bumper cap that hasn't even been painted yet (thanks to a cab that hit me) You *might* be able to get the bumper guards off without taking the bumper cap off, but it is easier to take off. I thought about leaving them off, but it would look a little funny.. as if something is missing. Although cooling might be increased...hmmm. I think it will look better if i filled them in.

The wire mesh idea had come to mind. I would do that if i had a set of intercoolers behind there. Since it is a curved surface, i think it would be hard to bend it and not have it crimp up too much.

89FirebirdUK: I am originally from England. How is driving a chicken in the UK? Those country roads must be awsome... except when you need to let someone pass you, the car is rather wide. I bet you are killing yourself with petrol costs, and we in the US complain about $2 a gallon!! I hope you have highway gears.

Hi Omega (and everyone else !)

I love driving my bird. I occasionally have a blast down a country road ! Sometimes parking can be a problem, UK car park spaces aren't wide enough and unless I have a passenger in the car, I have to get out to get the ticket.

If petrol prices weren't so high I'd drive the firebird a lot more often. I'm not sure if having 2:73 gears helps or not, but on average I get 15 mpg, I mostly do town driving.

So Omega how come you moved to the States and where abouts in England are you from ?

ALL THE NEW SPORTS CARS HAVE GROUND EFFECTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And even the wannabe sports car like the new monte carlos have an 1800 option for ground effects.... as for you firebird formula being lightweight lol thirdgen and lightweight dont mix. As for your car looking good without them.... thats up for debate.... Like an lx mustang and GT mustang...... GT looks like a different whole different car.

We all know that F-body's are not known as lightweight cars. I was refering to The formula having the same engine/suspension as the T/A, GTA but without the added weight of ground effects and other such heavier options.

89FirebirdUK:

That must be odd driving on the opposite side of the road for the car, i can only imagine. The 2:73 gears help you A LOT, i have 3:73's and they are killing me... well, that and a heavy foot. I used to used 16 MPG with my 2:73's, i don't want to know what i get now. I moved to the states because of my dads job. We did a 3 year stint in Ohio and have been in NJ ever since. I used to live in Cheltnam.

Sammy, i don't have a notchback.. i personally don't like the look. It was an interesting option, but i am not a big fan.

Does anyone know where Skauffel (sp?) is?
