Another GTA wheel thread

Got a set of these couple weeks ago and have been painting them black like my old set I had on my GTA. I love these wheels. I know they're not the norm of 17" but I don't care, I like them. No shots of them on the car just yet but here are some "in the works" pics. Once the black paint is solid enough, I'll polish out the lip and take off those ugly weights. Once rebalanced and checked for leaks (they haven't been on a car in at least a year), they'll be thrown on my car and with my sportline drop, I think it's going to look gorgeous.

Re: Another GTA wheel thread

The tires came with the rims so I haven't driven on them yet. Paint was standard black gloss paint that local part stores would sell to match the color to your car.

Re: Another GTA wheel thread

Wow those are real nice. What did you do to them before you painted them? Did you sand them down or anything? Or did you just spray paint 'em and thats it?

Re: Another GTA wheel thread

Scuffed the hell out of them before I sprayed them. The gold had no shine and was pretty damn smooth after I was done. They have about 3 coats of black paint and 2 coats of clear for now, might do 1 more coat of clear before I polish out the lips.

Re: Another GTA wheel thread

I should have pics tomorrow with them on the car. Put the last clear coat on tonight so they should be ready by tomorrow. I'll be giving the whole car the wash down as well, it's been about 3 weeks since it's last bath

Re: Another GTA wheel thread

I think you might have a problem. I did anyway...

If you did not use a heat-resistent specific paint you will find that the radiation of heat coming off the rotors will bubble the paint up. Makes the wheel look like it has warts.

I hope I'm wrong about this for you. Nice workmanship on the wheels!

I painted my old set with the same type of paint and the only problem I ran into was the paint faded from the heat and only on the front wheels. If this occurs again, I will be sending the rims out to get professionally done as I will NOT be doing this again I had to repaint one of the wheels last night because someone dropped a rag on the top wheel (I have them stacked in the garage), and it took the clear and part of the black off with it.

I sand blasted the old paint first...

That was what I was talking about. Powdercoat 'em and never look back.
