Clay Bar Treatment, Worth It?

Just purchased the Mothers clay bar cleaner and treatment system. Is if worth the $21 I paid? What results can I expect? Can I screw anything up? Thanks in advance.

It will make the paint a lot smoother by pulling contaminants out of your paint.

I don’t know how you could screw it up. Just use lots of the lubricant and very little down force. It takes a long time to do but it is very easy.

Absolutely! It will give you a nice smooth finish. You should do this before you wax.

Thanks guys for the fast response. This will give me a project for this weekends rain out.

Any suggestions for the wax to apply after. The kit comes with Mothers, which I have never used, and don't know much about. The wax I currently use is Macquires 26 paste. Any thoughts appreciated.

Ditto on the "Hell yes". It takes a while to do the whole car. I use it on my car and the results are awesome. I don't see why the wax wouldn't be good. Everything else Mother's makes is a quality product. It only cost $15 in my area.

Wax? None. Wax will yellow and cloud the clarity of your paint.

Polish, Zaino. In my opinion there is nothing better and I have been in the show circuit for a LOT of years.

Hey, Chuck, is that machine polished? I'm replacing my t-top weatherstripping this weekend. After that I'll be free to wash the 'bird without getting the interior all wet. I was planning on giving it the clay bar treatment, and then a good wax. I have a friend who used to detail cars who can loan me his buffer. Just tell me what to use and how to do it and I will follow your advice, oh, shine guru!

Da91Bird,

That car was color sanded but only hand polished with Zaino products.

I would suggest the following Zaino products.

Must have:
Z-1 SHOW CAR POLISH LOK PRE-CLEANER AND GLOSS CONDITIONER
Z-2 SHOW CAR POLISH FOR CLEAR COATED FINISHES
Z-6 ULTRA CLEAN "GLOSS ENHANCER" SPRAY

Optional stuff:
Z-5 POLISH FOR SWIRL MARKS & FINE SCRATCHES
Z-7 SHOW CAR WASH
Z-16 PERFECT TIRE GLOSS

I have never used the clay bar, but my cars finish is perfectly smooth. I spent a full Saturday with 3M Professional Polishing Compound. It was a lot of work, but I think it accomplished more than the clay bar, because it compounded out surface scratches.

The clay bar is excellent if your paint has a dry feel to it. Make sure the car is extremely clean so you don't grind anything in to the paint and use lots of the finish spray. I think it takes some was off too so rewax with Mothers. I like the way it comes off a ton better than Mcquires.

Do I have to order the Zaino, or can I pick it up at the auto part store?

Polishing compound can actually take some of you paint off as well. The clay bar does not do any damage to the paint at all. If you have a black car like I do you have to be carefull of what products you use because a lot of stuff shows up in the paint easily.

OH MY GAWD!!! That clay bar thing is a miracle. The paint job on my Z is hurtin pretty bad, especially on the hood (it's got that blitzed-hood look). I've tried about everything, even worked one spot over so good with rubbing compound that I took the clear coat, or what's left of it, right off. But I tried that clay bar, and for the first time in a year I saw my own reflection on my hood. I wish I had pix of the difference because it was amazing. But be forewarned, you'll be clay-barring your car for hours.
