Powder coating wheels?

A guy with a red T/A posted a pic of his car that has 90 formula wheels that were powder coated black. I think this would look awesome on a car idea I have. What does this entail? How long does it last? Any drawbacks? Whats the cost? Finally, where is this done? (I live in Wyoming)

It looks good. Lasts forever. Prices vary. It's a process where they use a special gun to spray powder on the object, then bake it in. That's why it's so durable. I've seen some places do 4 wheels for $250. Check the internet too.

Hey,
I'll give an answer. You gotta keep in mind, though that I like powdercoating so much, I'm seriously considering starting a business of it.

It does look great and it lasts practically forever. It's MUCH stronger than paint and is very tough to scrach or chip (IF prepped right). Go do a search on powdercoating (powdercoating.com I think is a good site, don't remember though) there's lists on these sites of shops in your state or whatever. It is expensive to powdercoat stuff, but you won't have to do it again (probably ever in you're lifetime). Find a good shop that'll gaurantee quality results and don't be timid about demanding flawless finish. the prep will mainly include a thourough media blasting of your wheels, masking if necessary, and then the powder is electrostatically applied (positively charged powder particles sprayed to a grounded part). this gives a great, even finish. the fuzzy wheel will then be cured in an oven for a certain time. the result will be awesome!

sorry about being so passionate about this, but it's great stuff and the technology of future coating.

Clem

If you love the look of powder coating, go to EASTWOOD.com and buy the gun for $150
then go nuts. You will need access to an electric oven, that will never be used for food again, or buy their heat lamp.

Hey guys , about the powdercoating. Go to my page in the signature. I have some 2k T/A wheels on my iroc, i hand stripped and wet sanded them, then polished them and had them powder coated clear at a local shop for 100bucks for all 4.

I forget which pictures the wheels are..

I have the eastwood hotcoat system and it works great. But don't buy the 600-700 dollar IR light system because you don"t need it. Just go to Home Depot and buy some Porcelin lamp fixtures and some IR bulbs(I use the clear ones). And your in bussines. I think just about coated my whole suspension including the bolts.

hey. im the guy with the red car. i dont think it does last forever. i keep getting little chips off of it. the guy i bought the wheels from said they were powder coated in summer of 99' . and i have had about 5 chips fall off in the last 3 months. but i just fill it in with black permanent marker.

the people that powder coated these wheels could have done a bad job. i dont know.

is it possible to powdercoat the center section of the GTA style rims, without screwin up the polished outside ring?

I think you CAN powdercoat the center section, you just need to tape off everything but the centers, pre-heat the part to about 180 degrees, spray the powder, then strip off the masking and bake. The pre-heat helps hole on the powder.

Guess what??

...I just bought me a Blue "M" lab oven that is big enough to powdercoat a 16-inch wheel! I also have the powdercoat and plan on experimenting with the application of gloss-clear powdercoat on aluminum. When it's ready, I'll probably start doing wheels for $40 apiece.
