I had an 84 Firebird that used to go on fire on me...Float would stick in the carb, fuel would overflow and fire! First time really reaked me out as I was getting off the highway I saw smoke. I thought I was overheating at first but quickly realized otherwise. I stopped had no water or extinguisher. I grabbed a dudes 40 oz and poured it on there...It put it out. Car would be fine for awhile, then poof! I started carrying an extinguisher around!

yeah the only good thing to come of this is new fire extinguishers, motivation and the car looks sexy!!
Edit, im pretty sure this happened because while installing the intake manifold, the fuel line busted when we went to crank it, then fuel went on the intake, we dried it up took the battery out then the next day(today) i got everything working and the timing was what caused it to burn the fuems on the intake.

What kind of fire ext. did you use?
it might be water.. but im thinking Gas stain or gas around the manifold bolts?
I dunno, just to share a fact that everyone here porb. already knows... and how i learned... I did the same thing to my 1983 camaro berlinetta, i Installed a 1967 350, and put on a semi high rise intake, however i used the stock 1983 carb.. and those seals around your throttle shafts, become worn and leak, and gas trickles out and drips onto the intake, and if your timing is off or your adjusting the timing like a was, and go too far one way you get sputtering and some Backfireing like i did.. however i was leaned over adjusting the dist. and it backfired and my hair was in the way... and everyone knows what that smells like... and i took my hands and ran them through my hair like a hundred times a second , and the next thing i saw was fire and black smoke.. Luckily i had a fire Ext. and put it out before anything was damaged too bad.. kinda looked like yours.. but anyway, get a new carb on that thing and a new spacer and gaskets.. and a fire ext. right beside you..

I think he was implying that wayfast84 must have been drinking that beer that was next to him... and everyone know Beer and fire do not mix... kinda like OUI/DUI whatever its called in your state.. However the beer may have been in the garage for a few days unopened... The dudes 40oz was the only thing that was available.. and thank god it was there!
Doesnt Everyone Know beer isnt anywhere near Explosive? Unless its mixed with something...
I am NOT Calling anyone a drunk..

Beer is not even close to being flamable.
Now if it was a 40 of everclear or something it could have gotten a bit snakey on ya!
