Allright, I'm seriously considering a paint job this summer if I can round up some money. I was thinking either black or white, but if guys wanna throw in suggestions, I'd love to here them. Also, if any of you are good with PS then I'd appreciate if any of you wanted to try playing with colors and posting them or sometihng.

Anyways, this summer I have a friend who both his dad and him race at Stafford Speedway in Stafford, CT. They do a ton of bodywork and stuff and have painted several cars including their race cars and a daily driver El Camino my friend just finished restoring (yeah he financed it himself and is REAL good with body work). Our plan was to completely sand down, prep and primer the car at his house, every section of it to be taken care of (except the interior, the jams and doors will be painted, but not actually under the carpet). I'm gonna pay him though, it won't be free, since I'd be using his lift and stuff and out of generousity I'd probably pay him a little, and he'd be doing most of the work and I'd be learning anyways. Me and him would probably pull the engine/tranny together and sand down and paint the underhood flat black just so it's easy to clean up and looks better then what I have now. That however he probably won't really count as work....

If I pay for ALL the paint and then give him the amount of money for the hours is takes him to sand/prep/primer/paint/clear the car, how many hours am I looking at total would you say? I'd get it much cheaper then a normal shop do to this being my buddy, but still gotta pay him SOME money and I'm taking care of all paint costs. I was thinking maybe 3 coats of paint and one or two coats of clear. Does that sound about normal (this ain't no show car, I just want it to look nice)?

dont do black man. it looks frickin badass but its the biggest PITA to keep looking good. It shows swirls like crazy which look liek complete crap. id go with white, its nice and clean and very easy to take care of. maybe even do white with some stripes or something

A nice white, red, or blue would look awesome on your car , Im still deciding whether to paint mine red or blue.

Naw, I don't really like GFX, I think it'll look fine without them once that car's painted. I was really thinking whitedo to the way it looks on nw66nova's SC. The other color's sound cool too.


Total job, he's just a buddy of mine, so I'm sure it's not gonna be a real strict outline of how much I pay him, just pretty much what he and I think is fair.


The reason I'm painting it now is because I don't really like red. I honestly have never really liked red cars. Black is starting to look out of the question too due to the maintenance I'll have to do and how bad it'll look if the car get's scratched or anything.


Got an example of this on a 3rd gen? I certainly don't like the red I have on the car now, but maybe a different red would be the way to go?....

I got a new idea. I saw this color the other day, and I REALLY liked it. Asked the owner what it was, he said it was a flat black that was then clearcoated and polished up, and it created sort of a flat yet shiny black. He said it was Satin. I thought it looked awesome and wouldn't be all that expensive either.

Anyone got any opinions on that color or seen it on a 3rd gen before?

Also, has anyone ever seen orange on a 3rd gen? I was thinking something like a hugger orange wouldn't look to bad.....

I always love a black 3rd gen, ur camaro would look great with it, some people also tell me to paint mine black put Im painting it blue.

I never seen a hugger orange, but a metallic orange on a 3rd gen, looked nice too.

That's exactly the combo I was thinking. Hugger with white stripes. Only problem is the cost of Hugger orange paint. How expensive do you guys think I'm looking at here? Is orange generally an expensive color to buy/paint?

Would anyone that's good with PS be able to maybe do my car in orange or something like that? Is it possible (I've never worked with photo shop before)?

red is the most expensive color to buy, ask me how i kno. as far as color id keep it red. i think cars with no gfx look bad *** red with black around the bottom, kinda how your car is now. as far as the clear you mentioned before, make sure you get at least two coast on it. one is nowhere near enough and definatly wont cover. id really recommend four if you intend to cut and buff the finished paint. hope that helps.

I've just never really been a fan of red at all. I just don't like it. I do however like the idea of Hugger orange.

Anyone have any opinions on Hugger orange either with or without stripes? I think it'd look pretty badass and definitely stand out.

If you really want to give your freind a break, have it painted the original color. This way it they won't have to paint under the hood, inside the doors, under the hatch.........you may not like the "red" that's on the car now, but keep in mind it's had many years to fade...........fresh red will look great on that car.............

Well I was thinking I could actually just rough up the factory paint and then paint the car, I've heard that this is perfectly safe to do as long as the paint it in good condition with no rust or cracking. The only cracking I have is on the nose (damn fiberglass), so I'd probably end up stripping that down, but I think the rest of the car would be okay.

So basically I could just paint over the previous factory finish after roughing the paint up a bit and then shoot about 3-4 coats of paint on and 2-3 coats of clear. Sound good? The only things I'd strip down are the nose and the drivers side front fender (car was vandelised). Seems like it'd be MUCH cheaper and much less time consuming.

I was originally planning on just stirrping it all down, but I've been reading the May and June issues of Hotrod and the articels they have on painting, and they say it's okay as long as the paint is in pretty good condtion. Does this seem like an okay idea?

I agree- you don't need to strip it all the way down unless it's showing some sign of failure- peeling, bubbles or such. You should ask your apint supplier for specific recommendations on the paint needed. You will need a primer, a sealer, base coats and clear.........instead of base and clear , you could also use a single stage paint. good luck

You know, I was honestly thinking about that, I had the idea in the back of my head. Only problem is I've never seen a green 3rd gens other then crazy hawaains that is green. So I'm not even positive what it would look like.

Right now I'm still leaning towards that Satin-black idea, but I'm not so sure.....

Wow, that looks amazing, that is one green I'd definitely do, but once again it looks like I'd need GFX to pull that color off. I'm not sure though, anyone know that name of that color? Is that car someone's on the board?

Anyone know anything about that green? It looks awesome. I basically debating between some type of green and some type of black, and I'm still playing around with the idea of white as well.


EDIT: Also, you guys think it's reasonable to believe that I could just scuff up this paintjob and lay down some more paint (or do I actually do primer again and then paint). Other then the hood and driver's side fender the paint is in pretty good shape.

Still haven't decided yet on a color. I'm really liking the idea of a satin black. It's incredibly cheap, and looks badass in my opinion. Of course the Hugger Orange combos are cool, but they're gonna be way more expensive to do.

I think the Satin Black would look killer on my car, espesicially with the Snypers. Anyone else have any opinions on a Satin black (flat black with clearcoat over it) 3rd gen?

i have a black car and dont like it dont get me wrong black is a good color when its clean but thats hardly never but like my friend was saying white shows the rust easy id go with silver or grey

I know Black can be hard to keep up. That's why I was considering this as a nice alternative. Later on some time down the road I plan on doing a REAL paint job/body restoration. For now though, I figured this would do and look good too.

Allright, I think maybe I'll try this. Considering my friend has all the material other then paint/clear, I'm guessing this shouldn't cost me more then probably $100 and a couple hours of pain in the *** work. Maybe I'll do it this summer.

I'm still not sure what color I should paint this, I'm definitely more towards the Satin Black, but white still sounds good too....

I'm going to paint my camaro sunset orange metallic with flat black racing stripes, but then if you did it like that, my car wouldnt be unique and then Ill have to burn yours down jk

Im not a big fan of shiny reds or blues on our cars, black looks amazing but like said earlier, a pita. White gets old and shows dirt easy, I had a white 86 camaro. Right now I have a dark gray camaro and it looks pretty sweet, but im changing it to the scheme I mentioned above.

I don't mind if white shows dirt that easy, the car almost never gets driven in the rain, and I wouldn't mind a little sand or anything, so white isn't a big deal. I know black can be a pain in the ***, but a flat black would be much different I think. Plus it'd hide any small imperfections in the body.

I saw a 4th gen camaro with a weird orange/red paint color, it looked really sweet and i was wondering what it would look like on third gens, possibly cooler than sunset orange.

I saw a white third gen today, it looked pretty sweet, but with your front end like that I wouldnt get white, white only looks good on like '86+ camaros.

But most importantly, do what you think would be best, no one should influence your opinion, just give you a broader idea.

I agree, but as I said, too much money as of right now. Maybe in the future. I think I'd do ti with ****e strpies though.

Those pics are a little old though, the interior is dirty because those pics were taken in winter. The car doesn't get driven with snow or alt on the ground, but there was still a bunch of sand and dirt, making it nearly impossible the keep the interior clean. It's good now though.

As for the engine bay, yeah, I know it's dirty. This weekend the engine is actually getting pulled and the engine bay is being degreased and then just painted a flat black. Whether I go with the black or not, a black engine bay is just a LOT easier to keep up and keep looking decent.


Yeah, I like white a lot. Your car is what put white into my head in the first place, at the time I hadn't even considered it.


That does look pretty good, I saw a gunmetal 3rd gen the other day and thought it looked pretty badass.

I think I'm still sticking with White or black though. Gunmetal looks nice, but don't know if it's what I want right now.

Also, can anyone tell me the aproximate cost of a clear coat? I don't need to have it done by someone else, I'll gladly do it, but I was just wondering about how much it costs. I was thinking with clear coat and paint I could probably stay under $75-$100 for black and probably under about $150 for white.

I've owned blue, green, white, red, grey, maroon, and even one champagne (don't ask...wife's idea).

Notice the "owned" in that above statement. I now have three vehicle...ALL BLACK. And they look sweet!

Personally, I do own a "black" Iroc. It is a badazz car when all cleaned up, BUT....personally, I would love to own a "YELLOW" Iroc with Black trim and lettering!

I think right now my main choices are gonna be black or white. They're both cheap, and in my opinion, look badass. Either way I'm just going to end up sanding the paint down with some 250 grit I think and shooting over that. The flat black is kinda appealing to me, because all the small imperfections in the car will most likely be hidden. Plus, although in my opinion flat black looks a little trashy (depends on the car though, some it looks totally badass on), I think with 2 or 3 coats of clear over it, it'll look pretty nice as well.

One question, when you scuff up the paint and simply shoot over it, you don't do any primer first rigtht, just color? If I were to go with white, which I'm really liking now too, I think due to there not being primer or anything that a few more of the small imperfections might be noticable.

I don't know **** about paint though. nw66nova, on your car, I believe I remember you mentioning it cost you about $200 to get your SC painted. Is that just the cost of paint or is it the actual price you payed at a shop. How'd you go about it also? Did you just scuff up the main paint, strip the car, or what?
