Takin the car to Maaco

Well, they gave me the best quote to paint the rest of my car (insurance is covering drivers side) so I'm giving them a shot. The shop warranties the paint for 6 years and the gloss for 10 and because the insurance corporation recognizes them as a reputable shop, they warranty the work for life. After hearing many bad things about Maaco, I was EXTREMELY hesitant on taking my car there, but after a good long talk with the owner, I came to realize that most of the people who bitch about their Maaco jobs picked the ****ty pakages. Hopefully everything turns out okay, but if it doesn't, I already warned the owner that he could be seeing alot of me in the near future if I'm not pleased

Anyone with Maaco jobs, feel free to hit me back with some feedback, okay??

Well, folks... I don't know what to say, except that I used to work at Maaco, and the quality is on par with that of Tijuana. Except, the people in TJ usually mask better. They don't disassemble ANYTHING, they just mask and mask and mask. You're going to have overspray for sure, and if it's not obvious, it's not painted. Also, if you have metal damage on your car, and live in a humid area, you're going to see a lot of rust in the future. Ya see, they don't use any epoxy or rust inhibitor of any sort (ever), and they don't even prime the metal before they apply their Bond-O equivalent.
My 2 cents.

I got the prime (Signature Series?) package, and because there is no body damage on my car, the total for the paint job is $900-$554 for my insurance claim leaving me with a balance of $246.

As far as quality goes, like I said, I've had a talk with the owner and he knows that if my paint turns out good, hes got 3 more claims coming in soon (friends) and he also knows that I'll be bitching if theres one thing wrong (warranty covers most everything anyways)so I'm confident it'll turn out okay.

The car is getting painted Maui Blue (again) and I will post pics ASAP!

Heres an oldie of my car!

What about if you did all of the priming and sanding yourself. Would Maaco still paint it, and would the warranties still be good? Jut curious.

That is what I did, and much to my dissatifaction there is no warranty on the paint job. Found this out after I did all that work to my car. Best thing is just to take ever thing apart and hand it to them to paint off the car. That way everything is completely painted.

are you serious? if you do all the work yourself the wont warranty it. that sucks.. i was going to fix everything myself and just have them spray my car. oh well if they wont then i will take it somewhere else i guess. i have to have mine done right or they wont do it. and since you get what you pay for i guess i will go with some expensive stuff. and have it last a lifetime. thanks for the info on MAACO.

$900 for the job minus the $554 from insurance leaves you a balance of $246 ?!? Is that in Canadian dollars or is your calculator malfunctioning?

Yeah, I found that out too, when I went to Maaco. I did all my own bodywork- and when the guy heard that, he told me they could just warrantee the paint for gloss- not adhesion or smoothness or etc.

They ticked me off with one thing though- my hood. I had a cd-sized patch of Bondo on my hood for a dent. I did the job perfectly- worked the dent out, gave it a thin Bondo coat, feathered it- the whole nine yards. Part of my paint job was a "machine sanding of all surfaces". The boneheads sanded that Bondo area FLAT- now, there's a flat spot in my hood that looks like I had them paint over a dent. Damn. Next time I'll use a different color primer, or something.

Of course, they weren't liable, because "Customer did own Bodywork" was scrawled across the invoice- nice job of covering their own butts.

I would take my bicycle to maaco, not much more.

i had to get a front bumper and rear bumper matched to my stock paint. I picked it up the next day and it was a different color white then the rest of the car. I look next to my car and there is a freshly painted white firebird, the same color as my freshly painted bumpers. Hmmm...

I also had overspray on my tires, wheels, chrome valve covers, slp exhaust, lets see...weatherstripping. Took a lot of cleaning up. There may be a "few" decent maaco shops out there, but most of them ARE NOT

There's one Maaco around here that does work like that (overspray, bad colors, etc)... that's why I hunted down my Maaco. I heard nothing but praise of that shop, and yep, it came out good. You definately have to visit quite a few shops...

Well, I got my car back from Maaco today and it looks great! They darkened the colour a bit, like I asked them too, paint is consistent and the only overspray was on the air damn which they immediately painted black when I pointed it out. Great customer service (they drove 20 mins out to my house last week to pick me up so they could show me a dent that wasn't part of the estmate, then they drove me home) and they painted my jams for free. Now its just the test of how the paint holds up, but I'm happy for now!!

Pics will be posted ASAP

My friend got his car done at Maaco. Got the best job they offered (I think he spent $800 or so). It looked good at the first look, but upon closer inspection he wasn't so happy. They actually painted the door jambs, but oversprayed onto his interior. They also forgot to shut the door after they parked it, which drained the battery (I had to jump start it with my Camaro ). There was overspray all over. They got the exhaust, chrome mouldings, weatherstripping, and even some on the moonroof. There were some runs on the back, which they fixed, and then paint started cracking, chipping, and flaking on the top. This they attributed to gravel and sand. We could not convince them that it was their own damn faults. All in all, I would never go to Maaco, ever. Maybe this was just a bad experience, but I could do a better job with spray paint in my garage.
