Candy apple red in a can!?

Well Im planning a few custom touches to my toys and I want to incorporate candy apple red accents on a few of the parts. None of them have a large surface area so that is not an issue. Since they are just parts to give accents, the finish being perfectly consistent isnt a must either, but I definitely am after that deep deep candy red color because its damn sexy.

So what I am wondering is...is there anywhere I can get the paint I need to produce the candy apple red similar to what is on Kandiedz's car in a spray paint/rattle can format?

I am aware that it is a three step process, silver base, "candy", and then clear. I can manage to find silver base, and clear in a spray paint can obviously, but is there anywhere I can find the "candy red" middle coat in a spray can?

I would love to do this but I dont want to have a bunch mixed if I dont have to in order to keep cost down. Thanks for any input you guys can give.

well you wont achieve candy at all using spray paint. The middle 'red' coat is a dye and not a paint....which is why/how you get the candy effect (like you can see through the paint).

however Im sure you can find candy apple red - the color in rattle can format....it probably wont have the glow that true candy paintjobs have....but thats the reason why they cost so much

So how would I go about doing this then? I know there is powdercoating that is a candy red. What about the Duplicolor Metalcast red color? As far as I know you spray it over silver or a "shiny" base and it gives an anodized red look. Is there a way I could use this and layer it to acheve that nice dark candy red the powdercoating provides and then maybe clear it to give depth?

Has anybody experimented with this?

Heres a picture of the candy red powdercoating on a quad frame. This is the EXACT look I am going for. So if anybody knows how to do this with paint that would be awesome .

if i wanted to powercoat something, i would talk to the guys at the local four-wheeler shop or motorcycle shop. Kind of a long shot but i know the shops around this area can do it.

I could get the parts powdercoated...but that ups the cost significantly due to the sandblasting costs as well as the multi stage powdercoating process. If there was a rattle can out there that could get a similar look by using the same process it would be perfect. I am going to experiment with the Duplicolor Metalcast this weekend and I'll post pics of how it comes out. If I am careful I think I may be able to get it to look close but I dont think I could get it to have the same depth candy does.

Walmart has House of Kolor spray paint now. Its a three step system. Base, candy, clear.

and actually come to think of it, I remember long ago when the spray paint kits came out for the chamealeon paints.....those were three-stage too....unless you were doing something small like orgiginally posted, the consistency of the paint would look terrible

....whoops meant to edit, not quote

nice! Thats the answer I was looking for . I wonder if they sell just the middle candy coat because it would probably be cheaper to buy separate larger cans of silver and clear. Like camaroguy18 said how much is it going for?

I forgot, there is also testors candy apple red which is transluceont....many people on the site use it to paint the amber part of the tailights red.....not sure if its what you're looking for, but I'd base the price per can off that (couldnt be more than 5-15 bucks for a can I'd imagine)....and just for reference, my car was done with a gold base, so you can compare reds

what color base do you think the frame I pictured above has? Because that is that color I am going for.

you really cant say unless you knew for sure. Candy changes color so much under different forms of light, and it not only depends on the base coat, but the number of coats of candy as well....here are two pics, one at sunrise and one midday....same paint but two distinctly different shades (and the first one looks similar to what you're trying to achieve above...which is also taken in dark lighting). Ive found that for candy to really glow, it needs to be in a dark setting, but with lighting overhead.....if I pull into a gas station, the flourescent lighting makes the color glow like crazy

cool thanks for the info. I didnt realize that color was effected so much by light. I think it would look excellent on under hood parts because it has the hood to shade it and usually doesnt get direct sunlight so the color should appear darker like I want it. I cant wait its gonna look hot.

i just finished paintin a 67 GTO model car. I used the Testlers (i think) Translusent Candy Apple Red and a gold base coat. it doesnt glow or change color as much as a real good candy job like on camaroguy18's car. it does change a bit from goin to sun light from regular in house lights.

i got one pic but ill get an outside pic to show it better tomarrow.

ill get a better pic tomarrow, this one shows it more of a solid red, you can notice alittle differnce more towards the rear.
