flame thrower for show?

Hey guys, went to another car show this weekend and they had the usual burnout contest but with a bit of a twist... they also had flame throwing contests. You know, you've seen them before.. some sort of an ignitor in the tail pipes and a fuel source... Voila. Flame thrower.

Just curious if anyone on this board has this installed in one of their f-bodies. How are they made? I'm tempted to try and make one in one of my 'daily driver' cars for ***** and giggles. Show some pics if you got one, and some details on how to make it work. Thanks!

Here is a pic, not a f-body, but just so you'll have a visual idea.

they work by making your engine dump a crapload of unburned fuel into your exhaust and an ignitor at the tailpipe sets it off
not very good for the engine im sure

yea. there are inherint problems with that.. you have to run your engine dirt rich in order to do it well. or have a seprate fuel source that enter's into the fuel pipe and then have an ignitor to catch it all on fire..

Depending on where the exit comes out for the exaust it could work. or it could burn the back of your car up... on f-bodies and the plastic rear i would be wary of melting it.

i think they are pretty sweet, but you better have tips that are slightly down angled, and away from the rear bumper cuz they get pretty hot...

but i'll tell you guys my idea...take 2 of those portable propane gas grilles...like the ones people take camping with those little green propane tanks...take 2 of those, plumb each one up to each tailpipe, and use either the regulator off the grille, or just put a butterfly valve in or something..then just come up with an ignition source...spark plug or something...

that way you don't have to run your car pig rich, just rev it to get some air flowing, so you can get some distance...i'm not sure if my idea would work, i never tryed it...its just that, an idea..

yea. you could do it somwhat like that. get like a nitrous like purge valve so you can activate it with a switch and then you can have an ignition button that lights it up.. if you have enough psi in each tank it should push that stuff out pretty good.. that also works nice for a two step process to reduce accidental ignition. I here cops get pretty touchy about stuff like that. but yea.. definitely angle them tips down a little bit.... not to far. don't want to gcatch the ground on fire... and then you gas tank....

You do know that flamethrowers are explicitly forbidden by the BC Motor Vehicle Act to be installed on a vehicle on the street, whether in use or not, right?

of course they are.. they are an extreme hazard... to many things can go wrong lol. But i am sure there are lots of things on alot of cars that are not supposed to be on them. although the flamethrower i am sure is i am sure one of the more dangerous ones.. Look how many people run around with nitrous in their cars.. that is not supposed to be in them either for street use.

ya I just thought it would be fun.. give me something to do one weekend. I enjoy fabbing things up. It would be something I install and have a bit of fun with, then remove.. I wouldn't leave it in a daily driver.

However if a good system were devised, I'd be tempted to make a more permanent installation in a 'show' or 'weekend warrior' car...

Tune the car right (wrong!) and it'll spit flame anyhow. Hehe just look at the Aussie V8 touring cars spitting flame on the over-run

You don't have to run your car rich.... well i guess you can if you want to but the "right" way is having a switch that kills your spark........ supposedly you are supposed to rev ur engine, hit the switch, and then some guys just have cheap distributors connected to a spark plug a couple inches from the end inside ur exhaust. you'll still have to change your oil more frequently though.

i like the propane ones myself.... you dont change the engines fueling/firing at all... the engine is running normally, pumping exhaust air... a 'noid lets a regulated supply of propane into the exhaust about a foot from the exit, and its ignited just before exiting the exhaust system.. the air from the engines exhaust has enough velocity to help propel this tiny flame and make it appear larger...

its neat.. but highly dangerous.. that you have to ask about it tells me you shouldn't do it... lol no offence meant, but if you're not experienced with working with this stuff, it can be very dangerous.. heck its dangerous even if you know what you're doing.. lol

I don't see how it would be that unsafe, just keep the engine spinning so that the propane doesn't have a chance to build up in the exhaust. If you do it, I wanna see some pic's!

if you what to shoot flames out your car than your car has to have no cat converter. that sucks to much of a pain to see flames for a few seconds.

Re: flame thrower for show?

http://www.hotrodsetc.net/

iv looked at a kit online, and it seems to me, if your carberated, not a big deal, but fuel injection is a bit of a pain, mostly i think because of the cats, it seems 2 me that this kit comes with a ignition box or sumthing, or even a distributer, but this 1 is in a box, that conects to 2 spark plug wires, and keeps them fireing rappidly, like when utry n turn on a gas oven and the sparker goes nuts, instead of waiting for the gas 2 build up..and then 1 big bang. to do it in a fuel injected car, it said u need 2 get a fuel injector, a silinoid, fuel line, and possibly a fuel pump. u pretty much hafta inject fuel into ur tailpipe, in front of the pulsating spark. they sau propain has 2 high of a flash point. i dont kno. i want to make my firebird true to its name, but i dont want to be the first to try, lol, thats just my 2 cents
