Silvania Silverstar Conversion ?s

I did a search on the Sylvania Silverstar headlight conversions and found some really useful information. One of my headlight bulbs just went out so i figured now is as good a time to do the conversion as any. On my 91 GTA, I'm going to be using the seperate headlight housings and bulbs along with a Painless wiring relay harness to get more juice to the lights. I know that the headlight housings I need will be the H4666ST housings, but the question I have is, which bulb do I use? I looked on the Sylvania website and found two bulbs with dual filaments for both high and low beams. The H4 ST and the 9003ST, so which one of these do I use? Also, are there any silverstar matching bulbs for the foglights? Thanks.

I dunno if this will pertain to you since I have a Camaro and you have a GTA, but when I put Silverstars on my IROC-Z, it was a direct replacement that used the factory wiring. I did not need to buy seperate bulbs or enclosures, or any wiring harnesses. Just bought the Sylvania Silverstar replacements, took out the old enclosure w/ bulb, put in the new enclosure w/ bulb, plugged it in, and good to go. This was for both lows and highs. Hope that helped ...

Those "H4666ST" ones look like a sealed beam type. Not with a separate bulb? In which case they'd just drop in and replace your stock sealed beam.

If you want to run a separate housing and bulb you need to buy something like this. And some form of h4 bulb like this Or you may find them cheaper on eBay or you local places.

So the H4666 are sealed beams too? I always thought they were just bulb housings... my mistake. The reason for the wiring harness is that I heard of some people who put the silverstars on and they weren't getting enough power to the lights because of the stock wiring. Don't these lights eat up more juice than the stockers if they're that bright? My main concern is the stock wiring not being able to handle it long term.

I don't doubt the wiring can handle it long term.

How does the wiring harness you want work? Does it run power to headlights directly off the battery? If not, I'd just go to ace hardware and get some relays and 10 guage wiring to make your own. Cost just as much plus it'd be exactly tailored to you application.

Yes, it's a harness made specifically for H4 conversions. It runs the headlights directly off the battery using relays. Thing I like most about it is that I don't have to cut up any of my existing wiring.

Does it do away with your stock relay setup? Or would you be running relay upon relay?

there are silverstar replacements which are not hid and are meant to just be a nice replacement which typically are still expensive and then there is the sylvania silverstar hid upgrade which i was told upwards of $600 for the kit.

but i have no idea..

I just went to silverstars today. The H4666ST (or any 4666 for that matter) are a sealed full headlamp, they are just smaller than your OEM lights. I would not bother doing any sort of conversion to a 4666 light. Do what I did, go to advanced auto, get a set of H6054ST silverstar OEM replacements for 40 bucks, and be on your way. Also don't forget to mount the headlight lids at the right angle, otherwise they will look funny when closed and may jam.

Actually, the 6054 housing would be easier for me, but I have a 91. Our headlights are slightly smaller than the 85-90 headlights. There are loads of parts for 6054s at my local Autozone, but no 4666 whatsoever. Thanks for all the input guys. I appreciate it.

As for the harness, I believe it plugs into the stock harness so you don't get rid of your stock relay setup. You still need the stock relay setup to activate the high/low beams, so yes, in effect, I think I'll just be running relay upon relay. However, I'm no wiring expert, so I'm just going to get the harness and follow the instructions...

If you guys want the deals on true HID conversions, check this link. You can get the Hella kit designed for high/low sliding for under $400 and choose the intensity you want. Afyer I finish my headlight conversion, I plan to be getting a set of these in the 12k intensity range (I got a thing for purple HID's).

Sorry for the confusion, I thought you had a 6054 housing and wanted to convert to 4666. The 4666 non-sealed beam conversion might be a worthwhile project, but sylvania definately makes an H4666ST sealed-beam silverstar, there is a pile of them at my local advanced auto.

I ran an H4 conversion for my 6054 lights in my 88 Formula until it rained one day and I had to take them out since they were full of water.

The Bulb housings I had used a large rubber grommet to seal the wiring and backside of the light fixture but that grommet was too large to allow the headlight fit into the rectangular headlight pocket. In order to get them to fit properly I would have had to make the hole in the pocket larger so that the grommet could protrude through it and allow the headlamp to site fluch and get the trim ring on.

The next day after the lightbulbs popped I bought the sealed beam 6054ST Silverstars for $35/pair.

The H4's looked cool though,

Well, I guess from the looks of it, sealed beam is the way to go. Keeps things simpler, and it should work well with the wiring upgrade harness. But yeah, compared to newer cars, the stock headlights on the GTA suck bad... I can't wait to be able to run these. HIDs are cool, but waayyy to costly.

Zeph, where did you get yours from? I ran those h4 housings for months on my old 87 and the h4 "projector" housings on my 91 for over a year before deleting the popups and I never even had a bulb go out, let alone fill up with water?

Fred, I've got my old fake projector h4 housing+100w h4's+connectors if you want to buy those to try.
