WHAT COLOUR IS MY CAR?
Guys,
The paint on my hood is faded and cracked and letting the car down as the rest of the paintwork is immaculate.
A friend says he will spray it for me but we are having difficulty identifying the colour.
The car is an 88 camaro and the colour looks a burgundy metallic to me.
When I bought the car it came with a touch up stick with the following info on it.
'flame red metallic, code 74, WACC 8748'
The reason I am confused is because a parts supplier told me that this is an 87 colour and that the WA number for 88 is 9535 and that it is still called flame red code 74.
I have looked in IROC-Z.com (good site!) where I found colour chips for each year but code 74 is called 'dark red' and WA numbers are not listed.
Please could someone please confirm the name of this colour, its code number and wacc number. The last number is the number the paint shop requires.
I plan to use a 'DA' sander to 'flat' the paint on the hood then paint it and 'feather' the paint into the tops of the fenders and go over it with laquer. Does this sound OK? I dont think I will need primer will I, as the sander will leave most of the original paint on.
Finally I believe the original paint is water based (garbage), is it Ok to go over this with either cellulose or 2 pack paint?
It is difficult getting information on american colour codes in the UK especially as some inconsiderate previous owner has removed the sticker with the code on in the glove box!
Thanks for any replies

I would go to a GM dealer with a body shop and ask them if they could help you find the correct code. I went to my local GM dealer and they were more than glad to help me when I went through this.

Simon,
The name for both numbers are the same unfortunatly. The paint code for your year bird is on the code tag inside your center console .
It should be the last line of the ID tag stating with something like BC/CC (base/clear coat) then the WA code
something similar to,,
(**example**)
WA- L0848 U0848 A7372
Lxxxx = Lower color
Uxxxx = Upper color
Axxxx = Accent stripe color
74/8748 is Flame Red used from 84-90 &
74/9535 is Flame Red used from 88-90
Sorry the names aren't any different but I hope that helps you out some if you still have the Service Parts Id tag in the car somewhere.

The last e-mail is of great help as I think 88 was the first year camaros were made in California using water based paint and is where my car was made. Production still continued in Ohio for a few more years.
I'll bet the paint code you list from 88 to 90 is for California and the other one is for Ohio.
Cost of petrol in the UK is rather high 82 pence per litre last fill, which works out between 4 to 5 dollars per US gallon. I have company van which provides me with free transport so the Camaro is just a weekend toy.
Thanks for the replies

Re: WHAT COLOUR IS MY CAR? RPO TAG
Unfortunetly, my center console lid and hood was removed several year ago. I think I might also have to goto the dealership to find my exact match. I am positive it is a dark flame red metallic, WA 8748 also. Is there any other location besides under the console lid that I could find the paint code? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
