Got my chrome wheels today...
I just got my chrome Iroc wheels today. They are 16x8 with a 0 offset (same as the front). Does anybody know if my stock center caps will fit on these rims...I'm guessing they will but everyone I see running these wheels use the shiny center caps they come with. I thought it would look better with my stock black IROC Z center caps and with black lug nuts...that way there isn't so much chrome...I'll post pics as soon as I get them mounted.
If you have these wheels please post some pics because I'm curious what the 0 offset will look like all the way around, thank you.

Too much bling for me. . . I prefer the polished ones. I also like them better with black inserts and the proper section painted in gunmetal, but that's just me.

Yeah I know what you mean. I thought about polishing out my originals, but it's just too much work for me. Hopefully with the black lug nuts and black center caps it'll come together.

ahhh you replied before I could edit my post....I gave it some thought and realized a few exceptions where I have seen the same luster out of polished....ie your boze's. Im just hoping my hotrods will show off like that....from many of the pics Ive seen it's not as shiny

Kandied- you're saying that a coating on a wheel is more durable than a wheel itself. You just said chrome can flake off... care to explain?

If understand Kandied, the surface of the chromed wheel is more durable in that, it is much harder than the polished surface, therefore, will not scratch nearly as easily. Try using an SOS pad on your polished wheel, then use it on your chrome wheel. The chrome will be clean and shiny, the polished will be dull and scratched. The durability of the wheel itself is not changed, only the durability of the shiny surface.

I got them off ebay...$500 for the wheels and $90 shipping...Best deal I've seen on them...They came with center caps too, they're just shiny plastic ones though. If you're interested I can give you the ladies email and you can see if she'll give you the same deal...

Those are beautiful! I plan on getting a set or 2.... if I can swipe the checkbook when the wife is not looking!
It would be cool of someone could make a spinner cap for the IROC wheels, sorta like the spinners for the old Cragar SS mags. I would definately buy some of those!

I also like the fact that those wheels have the same offset... if you notice, your wheels and tires now stick out of the rear wheel wells by one half inch more. To get the same effect with stock wheels, you would neet to run 4 wheels marked "front", or use 1/2 " spacer on the backs. Filling up the rear wheel wells like that looks more agressive, IMHO. Purists may not approve, but I like the wider stance!

Great looking rims....
just for anyone who wants to know.
chrome is only as good as the prep work, Yes it can chip and peel. Its all in the Prep.
short version of how chrome is done.
1st step is to polish the rims.
2nd is off to get a copper coating to fill any inperfections and help with the next step of nickle coating.
3.rd is nickle. usually 2 layers.
This is what the luster and shine is.
4th is chrome. (clearcoat like paint)
Long Version.....
"Triple Chrome Plating", "Double Nickel-Chrome"
As mentioned, decorative chrome plating always involves at least two layers of plating--a layer of nickel and a layer of chrome. High quality plating requires a minimum of two layers of nickel. There will often be a layer or two of copper underneath the nickel. If the parts are plastic, there will be electroless nickel under that. If the parts are aluminum, there will be a zincate layer first, etc.
Salespeople are always looking for advantage, and will use any good-sounding terms they can get away with. There are no laws that define what triple chrome plating actually means, so salespeople will be prone to call their service "triple chrome plating" if there are a total of 3 layers of any kind of plating, or "quadruple chrome plating" if there are 4. So the terms don't mean much, although they should.
Perhaps the most important issue here is that quality chrome plating (for outdoor exposure such as on a vehicle) must have at least two layers of nickel plating: semi-bright nickel followed by bright nickel. The reason for this involves galvanic corrosion issues. The bright nickel is anodic to the semi-bright nickel, sacrificially protecting it, spreading corrosion forces laterally instead of allowing them to penetrate. OEMs require very close control of this factor, and there is a test (the Chrysler developed STEP test) which large shops routinely run to insure the right potentials. Control of this issue is probably the principal reason today's chromium plating greatly outlasts the chrome plating of earlier times. Experts argue whether copper plating provides additional corrosion resistance or not, but with or without copper plating underlying the nickel, chrome on top of a single layer of nickel will not hold up to severe exposure.
Chrome plating is hardly a matter of dipping an article into a tank, it is a long involved process that often starts with tedious polishing and buffing, then cleaning and acid dipping, zincating, and copper plating. This may be followed by buffing of the copper, cleaning and acid dipping again, and plating in two or three different types of nickel plating solution, all before the chrome plating is done.

Im setup to do chrome and polishing now also.

chris can you do chrome on billet? i'd like to have my 20's plated as polished wheels are a pain even on a show car. i'd like to do it as soon as i get them new so the polishing process is done and they are already in great shape.

They look great, as does your car! I'm getting the same wheel from
o.e. wheels direct, but in 17x8-I hope they look as good on my
white/gold Z-28 as they do on your ride.

I typically think that chrome is "to much bling" but man that one pic of the wheel mounted on the car, it really looks perfect. Keeping the black center caps was a move as well. Looks great.
We'd you order them from?
