Installing grilles on ASCD RA1 hood???
I just received my RA1 hood and was in the process of making it a functional ram air hood. I was building an airbox and cutting the inner layer of the hood. When I was in the car with the hood installed I noticed that the back of the hood is kinda big and bulky looking. I am talking about the part you look at when driving. Has anyone installed the same type of metal grille on the back of the hood thats in the front openings??? I was thinking it might break up the solid piece a bit. I know the RA2 hoods have this same type of grille. If anyone has any pictures I would like to see what they have done.
I was not sure to make one solid piece or have 2 seperate pieces. I was also curious what pattern to make them or maybe just leave it alone if it was a dumb idea. Any input is welcome.....
EDIT: Never have more than one window open on the desktop Mods can you move this to Body and Interior?????

If you cut holes in the back of the hood...won't you lose the "ram air" functionality??
Now all of the air is not being directed into your intake...you will lose some of that valued pressure.

Haven't seen a grill back there, honestly not seeing the point. But Dirk who used to run this site did mount gauges in that spot and it turned out nice.

Ram Air is just a coined phrase anyway on cars like this.I don't want to open up the dabate on RA being a bizarre type of forced induction of sorts. I just want some cold air for my TPI engine.
I thought about guages and thats a great idea but I don't want to go the aftermarket guage route or add guages there for my AFR, FP, nitrous, ect.

Yes I understand the concept of where you are talking...
I mean, now instead of "Ram Air" you kinda got "Crossflow"
Dig??
The air enters the front vents, and exits the rear, by the windshield... kinda lazily drawing a little into the intake...on it's way by, instead of forcing the air in.
You kinda got a combo ram air/air induction!!!

Ahhhh, I gotcha. I am not using a typical RA box found on the RA2 hoods. Mine will be a" one off" kinda thing. I will be using the same type of seal found on the hatch. The hood will fit snug against this. I am also using the inner hood seal as well on the fiberglass hood. Air will come in and thats about it.

On your R/A 1 hood, do your winshield wipers clear o.k at the base of the arms? I am going to have to lightly sand the lower edge by the windshield to make enough clearance to clear the wiper arm.

My blades clear right now but it will depend on what type of blade you have on the car. Some blade designs make the arm of the wiper sit a lot higher off the windshield. I still took roughly 1/4 inch off mine just to make a perfectly straight line. I traced out some patterns today and mocked up some templates to see if I liked it or not. I rhink it will be something I will try once I get the front of the hood open and get my airbox installed.

Kevin G., keep in mind that he has a TPI setup and the air filter will be sealed against the front openings in the hood. Opening the back may even be a benifit by lowering the underhood temerpature and won't affect the intake side at all.
I've seen pics around here that show guages and mesh installed on the back side of R/A hoods. I can't remember if they were RA1 or RA2 though. Show us some pics of what you're doing on the intake side of things. I've searched and can't find a good pictures of the underside of ASCDs RA1 hood. I'm interested in doing the same thing when I get one.

As for the intake I am using a Camaro v6 intake (or a tpi Camaro intake which is the same thing minus the MAT sensor). I will use the intake bellows from a MAF Camaro as well. I have already cut the intake box to fit up into the hood. I have chosen the filter size I want already so all I need to do is fabricate the upper portion of the airbox from lexan and plasticweld everything together.
I haven't cut the hood on the inner layer yet as I want to wait until I am happy with the airbox. I am hoping to be exact enough to have a seal simular to that found on the hatch, ect that will make contact with the underside of the hood to create a decent seal to get a good cold air supply. This will be accomplished simply by bonding a lip onto the top of the airbox that fits the contour of the inside of the hood. I have a few pics of the airbox already cut down, but with Xmas right here I will not have a chance to work on things until after the holidays.
As for the back of the hood, I have chosen my pattern and have the grilles cut already. Agian I just need to cut the hood to accept them. The seal found on the stock hoods that contacts the cowl when the hood is closed will be transfered from my old hood onto the RA hood. I still have some alligning to do before I pull the hood off. I am still working on getting the hood to sit level with my headlight pockets.

well here is a pic of my intake setup under my RA1 hood I called suncoast and bought their airbox setup and cut the back out of my hood and used weatherstripping to seal the box to the underside of the hood.

What this will do however is give you a really good CAI.

Razor, it sounds like you have a good plan. The only suggestion I have is that you use rubber weather stripping to seal the air box to the hood as 91RamAir Formula did. This is how the air box is sealed on 4th gens (at least I've seen it's that way on the SS hood.
91 RamAir Formula, can you post pics of how the bottom of your hood looks after cutting it open for the air box to fit? It is the ASCD hood you have, and not Suncoast's hood, right?
