Smoothie II rim size and tire size suggestions

I just heard back from Boyd Coddington about the Smoothie II's. I ask why they we're not made in 17x9.5's and what size could I use. The following is their response verbatim:

The Smoothie II is built using the newer smooth lip wheel hoop which is built quite differently, the face of the wheel hoop is one level, with a smooth edge, and the drop center section is toward the rear with one level dropoff lip for the backside. This means that the actual wheel center (design) part of the wheel is 1.25" larger is diameter and creates the appearance of a larger wheel. It also serves the purpose for FWD vehicles and cars/trucks that require a very high positive offset, such as the new Ford and Dodge trucks, newer Firebirds and Camaros etc. The valvestem is on the backside near the drop center of the wheel hoop, creating a very clean wheel face.

The '90 Camaro can fit a 17x8 and 17x10 Smoothie II quite easily. You can run a 235/45/17 front and 275/45/17 rear or 245/45/17 front and 285/40/17 rear.

You can also run a popular 18x9 front and 18x10 rear with 255/35/18 and 285/30/18 or 295/30/18 tires if you want a really wide fitment.

I like the fact that the valvestem is on the backside. Here is a pic of the wheel.

There is a member on here with 18x9.5's I think it looks good. I like these rims too I plan on getting them when I get the cash. I would run a 4.5bs on the front and a 5.75bs on the rear for a really nice stance with the 17x8/17x10 combo. They also offer the 18's in 18x9.5 you could run 275's all around with that combo.

I like the idea of running 17x9.5's all the way around but unfortunately they don't offer that size with those rims. I bet the 18's might look a little too big. That is the last thing I want to do is get a rim that looks too big for the car. Now I am contemplating the 17x8 and 17x10 combo. I just wanted to run a 275 tire up front too.

There is a member with 17x8's all around and runs a 275/40-17 tire it looks good, but that size tire is a little big for the rim.

18's on nolanr0413 car

Those look pretty good. I heard back about the backspacing with the wheels I mentioned. The 17x8's have a 4.5" bs, and the 17x10 has a 6" bs.

The 6"BS might need a little work so the dont rub the inside.

That's what I was thinking too but he acted like it would fit. This is of course with a stock stance, no lowering.

4.75" front and 6.75" rear with the lowest you can go. 245/40/18 front and 295/35/18 rear.

18x8.5 is the widest one could run with this exact setup and then you would need to make sure your tire is no wider then 255/40/18. if you had a true good condition stock height vehicle you could run a 10" 295 up front if you wanted to but it drives terrible on the street. wouldn't go over a 9 or 9.5" wide in the front for anything around a pro-kit/sportline drop.

personally having many different variations the 8/10 width combo is perfect but that's me. a 9/10 would also be fine for those who aren't really worried about the wheel not at stock track dimensions.

as far as the rim what they are referring to is called a reverse mount style. not sure why they are actling like it's new although i haven't seen anyone with smoothie or ttII's with a reverse mount yet.

here is a picture of my 10" reverse mount at the specs they are quoting. you can clearly see why they call it reverse mount as the step is inward. i like this look because it's very clean and does make the wheel appear larger then normal. the problem with their specs and angle is that the outer lip then because very prone to bends if you hit a hard bump... no different then if it were step mounted though i suppose.

anyhow i really loved the large lip at almost 4.5" but they didn't last long before i bent the rears and needed to rehoop at $300 a wheel plus shipping it isn't worth it for a driven car.

here is the same wheel moved in 1" after it was rehooped. the specs are above. many will argue however you like but the look above with the fat lip on the rim is nice.... however the placement of the tire to fender isn't. it looks much cleaner with the wheels at the proper backspacing. just wish i couldn't have talked to someone who had been through all of this before me as it would have saved me alot of aggrivation.

i ordered the 5.75 rear and 4.5 front rears are 17x10" fronts are 17x8. they are scheduled for delivery tomorrow...now just to pick up the tires.

how do you think this set up will fit i was looking at 245/45/17 frt and 285/45/17 rear. car is lowered with eibach prokit.

i post up some pics before rubber is mounted if anyone wants them. i can even mount them on the car to show the space, since the z is sitting on stands awaiting the tires.

it will look like my first posted picture... good width on the rims. the backspacing isn't bad but they will stick out a little further then stock dimensions. you'll be fine with rubbing as long as your shocks and springs in the rear are good and you don't weigh your car down. tell the "large" people to drive themselves.

i rubbed hard under very heavy acceleration with a passenger and occasionally over severe bumps or hard turns which is why i rehooped and moved them in 1"

here is my car with pro-kit and your exact backspace/rim width dimensions...

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
285/35-18 3.9in 12.9in 25.9in 81.2in 780 0.0%
285/45-17 5.0in 13.5in 27.1in 85.1in 744 4.8%

this list is a comparison of what i ran and what you will be running. my tires are very close to stock dimensions and i had issues. you will have issues with the rear... as to how much that's a guess but i would expect some. i would definately change your rear tire size.

your fronts are right on with tire size and the .25" off from my own or further out will not be of a concern. the fronts are good.

this is what i'd run for your rear tires if i were you...

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
285/35-18 3.9in 12.9in 25.9in 81.2in 780 0.0%
285/40-17 4.5in 13.0in 26.0in 81.6in 776 0.5%

for your sake i hope that my calculations are off and everything works but if your right about the above i don't think you'll be happy unless you at least change tires. i would possibly go smaller on the tire if you don't want to move the rims in, that or consider rolling your fenders. get them on and see how it works though, hopefully it will be ok.

thanks kandied that is most helpful.

i'm glad i posted the tire size question since i have not purchased or decided on a brand yet that will be great info to go looking for hoops with.

so 245/45/17 fronts and 285 /40 /17 rears.

the car is not a daily driver so bending should not be an issue, well it could be but the risk is low since the milage will be also. roads are decent here after the spiring thaw and the dpw does there patching.

if you drive the car 1' bending is an issue you will have a very large rim. measure when you get them i'm going to go out on a limb and say at least a 4" lip. while it looks cool, this is alot of open area and if you hit the right bump in the right spot your rim will be ruined and need to be rehooped. the advantage to a 2 piece wheel as well as the disadvantage. you won't find cast wheels in this design because of such. reguardless just keep your eye out then and know your routes. believe me if i can bend a rim anyone can. luckily though you have 17's so that is alot more security going for you.

reguardless do not use the above as a bible. just from one owner to the next since i've been there ahead of you trying to save you some headaches. take it under advisement and make your own decision.

good luck with it, hope everything works out for you.

got the rims missed the ups guy yesterday. so everything fits now to put some rubber one em and check fit again.

i think i am going to get bfg kdw tires, kdws is a little less cash but i don;t care for the tread design. i like the alt kdw design best.

Those are really sharp! What size are those rims? Is the valve stem going to interfere with the caliper?

like in my previous post above 17x8 front and 17x10 rear.

and for the stem no it will be fine it leans forward quite a bit i am going to use metal stems to be sure. metal ones can be bent to an angle if needed.

can;t wait for the tires.

nolan what did you think of the coddington rim when you got em. i think they could of done a better job on the emblems on em they don;t site quite the best i think they could. other than that they are sweet. i may pull of the emblmes and use a diffrent adhesive to tighten em up. they seem to stick out from the rim too much kinda like its a foam backed tape.

that's pretty much what they are... you could have opted for laser etched emblems. i prefer those much better as the colored emblems look out of round when the wheel is spinning and can often detract from the scheme. you can always get new caps down the road though.

Do you have any idea how much those laser etched ones cost?
