Chrome hood shocks

Well I have been looking for some chrome hood shocks for a while and can't find any for our cars, so I made my own:

I went to Lowes and bought a 7/8" Chrome towell rack for $11, I unscrewed the ends that mount the rack to the wall, I measured the rod and cut it to length with a pipe cutter like you use when cutting copper pipe. I put one piece of duct tape around my GM hood shock and used a rubber mallot to install the chrome rod over the shock. It fits very snug and does not move when opening and closing my hood.

What do you guys think?

I think that looks pretty damn sweet! It's always nice when you can get out of a mod on the cheap end.

Man, that's just freakin awesome....when i first looked at it, I thought you had'em chromed or something! Do you have the part number or anything? I'd like to do the same thing. Maybe you could make a Tech article on this one! This little mod could save a ton of cash for people who want to do this! Good Job man

Thanks for the comment. I think that I still have the box at home. I will look and post the information. I could not believe how easy it was, I have spent a year looking for chrome hood shocks or trying to figure out how to make something that looked good without sending them off the be chromed. The best part is that it is a mod that you can do for very little money and it looks good.

Just make sure the the diameter of the rod is 7/8", those stores have many different ones that are to small to fit over the hood shocks.

I have some covers like that on my birds hood shocks, I got them off e-bay ,, long time ago, $10.0 I think, they arn't quite as tight as you discribed, and are neatlly rounded on the top to keep them from sliding down. They look good.

OK here is more detailed information for you, including a photo of the tools used to make them:

Here is a close up of the towel rod in it's box, it is a Home Care product and can be bought at Lowe's:

No problem, when insalling them you will need to use just enough duct tape to go around the hood shock. If it overlaps then you have to much on. That will ensure a tight fit, which is where the rubber mallot comes in handy. Good luck and let us know how it went.

good job, the only thing that would concern me would be the edges where the tubing was cut. you would have to file it down nicely for show purposes and the fact the top is open the way it is but that's such a minor detail.

overall very nice idea, looks great!
