Aluminum polishing experts inside!

Hey guys, I started to polish my intake with good results. Although I ran into a problem I never had before. When I buff with white rouge, it actually takes some shine away. Nothing huge, but if your picky like me you can tell.

I have polished other parts and finished with rouge and it worked great! Any suggestions on whats going on?

This is a set of runners finished with tripoli.

I am not done with that set either, waiting on a set of bits from eastwood. All that was done with a big buffing wheel[s], need something to get in the small places.

Only thing I can think of is either you are using to much compound, or, you haven't sanded enough with 400 grit wet.

Yeap, either sounds like to much compound, and or you are not cleaning the buffing wheel enough, or properly.

How does one clean the wheel?

When doing any type of buffing, whether it be polishing aluminum, or buffing up your paint job. The actual buffing wheel or pad gets a compound build up, hence scratching the surface your trying to perfect. To do this we us a perferating wheel or buffing wheel rake. It has little smooth spikes on it and spins over the buffing wheel to remove any buildup. I've seen other just use a flat screwdriver, but I am not sure about doing that as I would think it would wreck the buffing wheel. The other thing to keep in mind, is to alway spin the wheel in the same direction, so if you are changing the wheels now and then you should mark the rotation so it always rotates the same way. HTH?
