Few cars have looked good with them... Not many.
They have to fit the car and be perfectly clean to look even decent in my opinion.
It'd probably look like a*s on my 88 Camaro, but on a black IROC... might look ok.

On black cars I think louvers looks sweet.
But on any other color... eh.
I hated them forever untill I gave my car a nice black rattle can job. And damn the louvers just help the flow.
But once I shave my handles, those bad boys are coming off.

I've replied to these before and I'll do it again.
I like the louvers on 3rd gens. I have 'em on mine. Too many people on these boards say they look too 80's. All I can say is wake up people and look at what you drive!!!
Some styles look better than others. The factory set offers sleak lines and a better shape. The Cragar brand were cheap and rattled. The 3 piece look looks horrible, IMO. A factory set can't fly off the car if they are installed correctly. Every set I have had requires either a mounting strip that bolted to the back glass with the window bolts and the louvers bolted to that or there are clips that surround the glass frame and the louvers lock on to that. My set doesn't rattle, sqeak or anything else. People don't like them because they require regular maintenance. I lift mine and clean the glass regularly.
Since this is an opinion thread, I'll also mention that I don't like the window tint on 3rd gens. My reason is as dated as the cars. During the 80's, window tint was not as prevalant as it is today so the louvers did their job. I also like the raised white letter tires and the no cup holder feature. I eat and drink at home or in a restaurant, but I DRIVE my car.
As for does anybody make them anymore, I don't think so for our cars, but they are now available again for the Mustang since they brought back the Mach 1.

They can look very nice on the right colored cars.
The only thing I have against them is their ability to etch into the windows and of course the rattle alot of them have.
The maintenance aspect I would have no problem with, as long as the end result was them looking good on the car.
Good point regarding the "Look at what you drive" comment. True, many of us forget that these cars are from the 80's era. Back when pink spandex and neon green was cool... on guys that were considered hard rockers.
Its only natural for the car to look the era it came from....
"Your 2nd gen bird looks too 70's ish.. "
:lala:
The only louvers I don't like are the really massive ones that make the car start to look like a reptile of some kind.

OK, well since Scott likes 'em....now everyone likes 'em!! J/K
Scott, you're right about the factory louvers lookin' good, and yeah, the 3 piece looks crappy. I still prefer NO louvers,or tint....although tint helps keep the heat down a TON, in the summer!
The car looks dated? I'm not even sure how to answer that! Some people are holding on to the dream that our cars look new I guess.

The factory louvers have a rubber strip that runs from the top to the bottom on both sides right at the curve. This strip keeps the metal from resting directly on the glass and rattling. The rubber seems to leave a mark on the glass, but it is easily removed with a good window cleaner.
OK, well since Scott likes 'em....now everyone likes 'em!! J/K
And why are you being different?

all of you have great points mine was installed w/ 2 moutnig points that they bolted to on top and are supposed to lift up for cleanin which aint bad window gets dirty clean it!! lol
after lookin at a set tho that is uncommon the 3 piece w/ the sides and the center i kinda lena towards it
and do agreee that some look liek an armadilio w/ em close together n big
also some ive seen do have the rubber around them to keep em fomr rattling
and yes i know al too well they love to etch glass mine sure did lol!!!
just too bad mine doesnt have them. werent on there when i got it workin on gettin a set tho n prolly 3 piece n they wil be painted to match i think lol maybe just black
very true tho they are fomr the 80's and i lean towards the era theme or the past era theme and not alot of new age
altho the front is goin to be new age like billet grille or mesh and older front fende rlouvers maybe
older spoiler, louvers,
tailights liek new w/ covers headlight covers to which is new age
new age system and electronics
so kinda blends w/ all
old style cragar s/s's
low pro new age tires just about eveyrhtign is goin to go w/ and blend agge gens basically

i need ,my car had them when new,but of course gone when i got the car,the rear glass is already etched, and the window trim has the paint removed marks from the mounting tabs,i think they look great on thirds, esp IROCs to flow with the hood louvers??beside you're not supposed to tint a rear window with defroster??

Well I vote yes to louvers too. I'm in the group that thinks they go well on certain car and not others but that they do look good on these 80's cars for the most part. I do think they might look better on Camaros vs 'Birds - that's a picky opinion of mine though.
Mine are faded and don't look as good right now for that reason - If anyone has some quality tips for me as to how to approach refinishing them, please say so or e-mail me.
But I say they're a cool touch of the 80's for third gens. Thumbs up!

I'm up to 11,500 miles. The unfortunate thing is I don't have a trailer for it anymore. The car is in FL and I am in VA. I need to get it here, so it will be driven. Then there's all these shows I need to get to......Carlisle, SuperFest, etc....The miles will start rackin' up now.

Yeah, yeah, I know there are some big differences between my car and Scott's - mileage, totally different interior, year etc. But they do look prety similar too - just a kind of neat coincidence.
Scott, got a question for ya regarding the color of the pinstriping and decaling. I understand that your interior is a light gray; what color are the IROC badges on the doors and the colored stripe of the pinstriping - a gray tone, or gold?? Hard to tell from the pics. Just wondering cause I thought they put the gold with the tan interiors exclusively - but then I thought, what color striping/decals would they put with the gray???
Oh, also just wondering where 'bouts you are in VA?

Scott, your Iroc is Silver/black with Grey, correct?
The gold wheels and stripes did automatically come with the Medium Beechwood Deluxe cloth or Light Brown leather interior. I don't see why you couldn't have specified one without the other, however I've never seen it. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist though.
...that's at least for the 89....(probably 88-90)

Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm traveling and I don't work on this computer everyday.
My car has the medium grey custom interior with leather. The striping is silver and black. I originally thought the gold package came with the tan interior, but I have seen some cars with the mixed combination. The majority of the cars with gold package have gold accent rims, tan interior and gold decals. Here's a good pic that will show the colors better.

I took the louvers off my car before I even left the guy's house I purchased it from. The guy looked at me funny and asked what I was doing. I asked him where the nearest dumpster was and he pointed.
Just my personal preference though.

UmmaGumma-
It's totally a "should-a, would-a, could-a" thing at thins point, but buddy - there are enough people around who want louvers you might have been able to sell them for a pretty price.........
Scott -
Very cool - the latest pic does show the colors well and the silver is now clear to my eye. I wish my ride was set up that way because my options for new wheels would be broader!!

onebluemcm - I hear what you're saying. In fact, the thought of selling them had crossed my mind until I saw them. They were pretty beat and rattling all over the place. I didn't think anybody would want them anyway.
I honestly have to say that the only car that they look halfway decent on would be a black one. Maybe silver. Not Ultra Blue Metallic as it was in my case...

I would vote no now, that said.......I've got a set on my '87 TA am wanting to sell, great shape.
Have no idea what their worth , think I actually paid something like 200 for them. Will sell dirt cheap and have connections at FEDEX to ship cheap, will pack well and like I said CHEAP, cause we are likely the only group that might be interested.
Make an offer via email and thx.

yea thats why i knida lean towards the factory ones that have aluminum center and plastic end pieces so theyre 3 piece but w/ metal center or solid one piece plastic rather then the stick on 3 piece plastic type
so mainly tryin to find some that are factory kind
just waitin on word from the owners about em

I personally don't really care for them of Firebirds. I think they look pretty good on Camaros though. As for paint them to match, that depends on the color. My brother's match his car and I really like them, but I've seen others that I hated. My preference for a Firebird is dark *** window tint and no louvers. Camaro's can go either way, but who cares what others think, it's your car. Do what you want to. If you build it to suit others, you'll find that it's never quite what you want. Do it your way, and tell nay sayers to pound sand if they bitch about it.

Nothing should go on the back windows of a thirdgen ever. Everything looks retarded, ******* or just plain tacky. Outside of wheels and a few other basic things our cars look totally fine stock and don't need a whole lot.
It's just my opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I used to be a strong supporter of window louvers, but recently I've seen far too many Camaros with them on - and I must admit they do look a bit unsightly. Most say they look "too 80s", which (considering the decade in which most of our cars were made) is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.
A better way to put it is that window louvers simply haven't aged well. The only car I believe they still look bloody gorgeous on is the Delorean. Man, that's an awesome car.
