15X8 rim, how wide

ok i got a set of 15X8 rims on my 78 cehv, they are the stock rally's and i want to put some beffier tires on them since im gettin new tires, in a few years i will get gettin some new rims, probally TT2's, but not sure, they will be 17 or 18X9.5's front and 17 or 18 X 11's out back, because i can.

but what width do you reccomend for some beefy look now, like 275's, i got 235's all round now no rubbing.

This is s tough question especially without a pic of your car or an idea of the clearance you have. I've told other people this before and this seems to be the easiest way, I've done this as well. Go to a local used tire shop on a slow day. Give the guy like $10-$20 to mount a few different size tires on your rim and see what they look like. I'd start off two sizes bigger and then go from there. Also, make sure they do it on one of the two front rims.

A 255-60-15 would be a good choice for a 8" rim.

Personally I would not go any wider than 255's all around. I think 245's are wide enough for an 8" wide rim. I have seen 275s on the rears with 8" wide. I wouldn't do that. I would think thats a lot of tire overhanging the rim thats unsupported.

Devianb - So true, depending on how tall the tire is, you can get an aweful lot of tire-roll if it's too wide.

I've got 255/60/15's on 8" Rallys on the back of my '66 Caprice and they are plenty wide. The "bulge" is just right (that's what she said). You won't have sidewall sticking way off of the rim like you would with 275's.

well its a 78 chev truck so there is plenty of clearance.

so ill probally just got with 255/60/15's then, until i get TT2's in 17X9.5's all round, then run 275's out back and 255's up front.
