I don't think there'd be anything physically preventing you from doing it. But, it's there because the automakers are required to put in a 3rd brake light. So you may want to check you local law and see if you can legally remove it. You'll also probably have to retint the whole rear glass for it look not look like you removed the light.

Yes you can do it but in Fl. if they pull you over and see that you have a car that was made after 85 I believe you will get a ticket for it. Will probably be a fix it ticket and you put it back on and show the courts you put it back on.

If you take the brake light housing off of the glass there will be two holes in the glass... so you would have to end up getting new glass anyway... which entails getting the whole hatch section, mainly because it is simpler that way... why not just leave it on? You would not save that much weight... it only weighs like... 2 pounds at the most. But hey, if you want to go through the trouble, go right ahead.

Like some people have already mentioned, check local laws before doing anything.
I went through the CA Vehicle Code several times before I was 100% sure that it was ok for any and every car to run with just 2 brake lights, as long as they met certain standards.
As far as covering up the holes, a temporary solution would be to by those, hmmmm, can't remember what they're called right now. They have these rubber caps at most auto stores. They can be squeezed into small holes and then expand to make a tight seal. Might look a bit tacky, but it would be a temporary, quick and cheap solution. I'm using one to cover up the gaping hole the antenna left, until I can weld it shut.
