Has there ever been a chopped top thirdgen?

I was watching hotrod magazine on TV the other day and noticed a lot of classic cars with chopped tops. I was wondering how a thirdgen would look like with a chopped top. I imagine th most difficult would be making a new glass area for the rear.

I've never seen one but now that it's been brought up I'm curious as well.

Anyone? Pics?

we have talked about it here before, but what i got out of the whole conversation was that it would be near impossible without unlimited funds, because of the way the hatch is....you would have to chop that somehow, then you would almost have to extend it....it would just be almost to difficult and the roofline sits so low anyway.....but i would love to just see what it looked like

I think the best way to do it would be to put a notchback in at the same time and modify that to fit rather than the original hatch.

I reworked Stuart S's TA. I think I am one of the few people who could actually ride in a chopped topped thirdgen without my head touching the ceiling. I have about 5-6" of space between my head and the roof now.

I raked the windsheild by an extra 25 degrees to make it look more aero dynamic.

The rear would just have to be made from some form of a notchback because making a glass that wasn't made of lexon would cost a lot.

I think it looks even meaner.

Not bad, not practical because the roof line is already low enough, if it wasn't for my T-tops then my head would be hitting the roof

Now, we need a chopped and channeled 3rd gen for the ultimate in difficult photochop jobs.

In a sense, I'm honored that he chose my car as a basis, but in another sense, I'm pissed. After all, I am king of OEM-ity

Don't worry, I'll get over it...

With all the white trash ******* inbred trailer park pimpin thirdgens there are out there to pick from, why did you have to bastardize such a beautiful example of automotive technology?

I think something along the lines of that redraif character's car wouldve been more appropriate for this abomination you call a photoshop.

There was a thirdgen bird on ebay months maybe a year or so back that was completely custom. I remember seeing it float around the boards. It was ugly as sin. Was chopped with some 30's sedan wheels wells covering the rear tires, funky *** front bumper, modified notchback and some other stuff done to it. It was black and reminded me of a gay badmobile. But the chop looked pretty decent if the rest of it had been kept stock (of course retaining the notchback)

Redraif has more blood sweat and tears, let alone time and money in that car, than most of us here.

You don't have to like it, but you should certainly respect it.

The rest of us do.

Stuart S.

I apologize for using your car without your permission. I know you have a nice car and take a lot of pride in it. Yours was the first good side shot I had to work with in my thirdgen TA gallery.

I was just in such a hurry to see how a chopped top would look. I'll never use your car for another photoshop again.

I'll just use my own car for future photoshoping.

I only use other people's cars because they take less time to photoshop than my own.

I guess thats the kind of phrase you say when you are upset, because I had never heard that expression before and left me a bit seeing as how I have never seen a sack of smashed *******s in my entire life.

hahaha... sack of... so damn good.

C'mon guys... that is something so petty to be pissed about.

I think a chop top would look cool on a thirdgen, but in all reality, who would be able to drive it?

It'd be bas *** to do a major reworking of the car, maybe lengthen the doors, or have stock doors with little suicide doors (Chevy SS style) and have no back seats. Just driver and passenger where the back seats would be.

Basically a chop top coup giving you a buttload of leg room.

Anyways, in the 30's no one could of ever imagined a hot rodded slammed and chopped ford coup.

So it will be interesting to see what will happen to some of our cars in 60 years.

Well if it can be done on a Fiero then I think it can be done on a thirdgen. There are a few chop top fieros out there....check out V8 Archie for a few examples of chop top Fieros. Definitely an intresting idea and different.

The closest chop tops I have seen on thirdgens are those dirt track stock cars.

fieros have a mid/rear mounted engine. theres nothing really up front.. so they already have a buttload(SACK OF SMASHED *******S??? ) of legroom

also fieros are a space frame design. with bolted on plastic body panels.

fbodys arnt anything like that.

the big prob i see, is if you lowered the top, you would have to lay down farther in the seat... and so you arnt staring at the dash, you have to raise the seat up....

it would be kinda a PITA.. and while our windshields dont look it.. they are HUGE... when you lay it down flatter, it looks very 4thgen-camaro-ish.... not somthing i like...

Mods sorry I loaded more then 3...I forgot...then I tried to go to my cardomain site, but I'm having issues with it loading the pics...getting error messages...

Anyway, I would not have posted so many if they did not show different angles for everyone to get and idea of what a chopped 3rd gen looks like...

Redraif... tisk tisk tisk. I always thought you were original with your headlight mod. But you obviously ripped it off. You better go back to the drawing board and redesign it. You know, something to meet MY standards, and make ME happy.

I have a lot of bad things to say about that car, but I know someone else will chime in for me.

But...

I think it is really sweet that someone at least attempted it, and the picture quality looks old, so I am guessing they were way ahead of their time doing all that stuff. I would be really interested in a tech article. Because that was (no matter how bad the car may look) done extremely well. I mean, it doenst looks extremely screwed up anywhere in the way of bad welds and such. Anyway.

It kind of reminds me of that car in this movie with... Charlie Sheen I think. And he is like an alien or something and his brother gets killed and he road races all the dudes that helped kill his brother and gets them in car crashes, and he keeps reincarnating. And he drives a motorcycle all the other times. Damnit any of you older memeber's who were teens in the 80's know what i am talking about?>

Damnit.. it deleted everything I just said.

Basically. That car is plain interesting, I respect the work. I mean flame it all you want, but that was a really good chop so the guy who did it probably knows his stuff. It would be cool to see it on a hot rodded bird/maro instead of a... plain wierd one.

Anyways. It reminds of a car in a movie with Charlie Sheen, where he kills a bunch of guys kamikaza style and then reincarnates cause he was an alien or something. Any of you TGO'ers who were teens in the 80's know what i am talking about?

Engine: Stock carbed 305

That movie is called The Wraith and he drove a concept turbo charged Dodge Vector. =) As for the chop top car I wonder if he takes that thing out for top speed runs or something it looks super aerodynamic. THere are other pictures of it floating around it has a different hood now. Its an interesting car.

Yeah I had those other pics, but they were on the zip disk...Iomega is going to hear from me about this! At least they have a recovery service...I wonder what it costs to get the data recovered! I can't believe both the original and back up went! Ugh!

Anyway...I did my headlight mod before I knew about this car!

I believe I remember hearing from one member that saw it in person that it is a well done car. Just some obvious 80's flare

I'm pretty sure the movie was called RAY with Charlie Shien. I remember waching it on TBS on day and after every commercial that kept saying now back to RAY. I swear that movie is almost impossible to find.

Car: 1989 TransAm GTA
Engine: One sweet modified 355 TPI.
Transmission: The kind that shifts....
Its called, "The Wraith." The car that charlie sheen drives is actually called a Dodge m4s Turbo Interceptor. It was developed in conjuction with PPG who still currently make the car for 75k I think.

And if the main bad guy in the movie drives a Corvette then its definitely, "The Wraith."

Notice the rims. ^_^ Powered by a Twin Turboed (t-25 garret) 2.2L turbo chrysler motor modifed by shelby. Head is a ported 16v cosworth head. 440bhp. Top speed is 193mph.

the car you posted Redraif belongs to a guy I know in a car club I'm in. The rear notch is completely custom (this guy's been doing custom cars for years!) and borrows parts from a few junkyard cars. the original car was a 1989 formula ( I believe...it's been a while since he showed it) with 350 TPI. If you think the outside is outrageous....you should see the engine. Absolutely gorgeous.

His concept was to make what should have been the Pontiac Firebird of the times with all Pontiac materials. even going so far as to make fake documentation and sales brochure for the car with...gasp.... a 349 H.O. engine. Everything is completely proffesional and this guy deserves alot of respect for the car.

I'm pretty sure he wants to sell it. That's what he said last I talked to him anyway. It's one of those cars you won't soon forget.
