CrazyHawaiians 91 z28 on 18" Boyd Tuned Wheels
Aloha! This is going to be my running thread on the progress of my Z28 project. This post was originally started to show pictures of some new wheels, but since then its become a collection of pictures of my Z28. So I decided to edit alot of the original posts and include more pictures and more specs, kinda turn it into a running progress thread. If you would like to see the thread I made when I originally got the Z28, check it out here. When I bought the car it was already modified but I've been trying to take it to the next level. This thread is going to have all the pictures and specs of the car since I began modifying it. The old pictures/specs will be at the beginning of the thread, newest pictures/mods/specs at the end.
This frst post covers a car cruze on 7/20/2003 with the club EFI Unlimited. This was the first time I took the car out on the street with the new mods and the turnout was great. I showed up with my new set of wheels, new grill, and mildly redone rear suspension. There used to be pics of everyone on the cruise but the gallery was taken down, and I'm not in the club anymore so sorry folks, not that many pics. In fact here's the only pics I still have from the cruise! As you can tell from the pics, the drop is not quite where I want it. The rear stance is good but the front is too high!!
Here's the specs circa 2003:

very nice, it looks great. the front looks a little higher in relation to the back, what if you raised the back to make up for it. THe car really looks good, the fit on the hood is awesome. nice car very nice.

Car looks really nice, I've been hearing about these wheels for months, nice to see them finally on your car....
But yeah, as you mentioned that front needs to come down...

Those rims look great. I agree that the front looks a little high, but I still love your car.
Edit- Just looked at the cruise pics, I can't believe all those sweet cars are on one little island.

Wow shawn, The Boyd Coddington Tuned rims make the 91 look much better than with the RoH ZSs which still looked good. I had no idea the Tuned rim looked that good. I want some now.

Thanks for the compliments guys!! The color is indeed Sunset Orange Metallic. The wheels were $1600 to my door, tires another $970 to my door, so total was just over $2500. I was really happy how the rear spring setup worked out. It rides ALOT better now (no slop at ALL). I cant wait to do the front. I had alot of fun on the cruze. Its not often I get to drive around with a bunch of hi po cars like that. Those guys with the Ferrari's weren't afraid to test our guys out. They raced one of the Supras (Supra won) and one of the Stealths (Ferrari won). I didnt act up because I know I'll get smoked. I'm happy to know that when I get my motor/drivetrain where I want it, I'll be able to test my car against some of the best. I think someone got some video, I'll post it when I find it ...

The 9 is the month of the inspection, the green thing is the year( it changes color every year.

Thanks for the compliments! Rear drums really do suck. Combined with the tiny front brakes, the stoping power is very weak compared to the 92 B4C I used to own (1LE brakes). My 91z even has the G92 RPO, but I'm not sure if thats related to the brakes. Anyways, I cant wait to do the C5 fronts and LS1 rears. Not only will it look alot better, it will be alot safer.

are those aluminum rear drums crazy, b/c i was talking to a guy about a 91 Z28 with a 350 and i asked him if it had rear disks and he said no, i was shocked, b/c i though all L98 equipped cars came with four wheel disks

I'm not sure. Do you know the RPO code for aluminum drums? I can go check if you'd like. When I do the LS1 rear discs I'm going to give these drums to Revlimit. He prefers the drums because they lock better than discs when you pull the E-Brake (its a drifting thing).

Yeah the ROH ZS's were 17x8.5 front with 255/45/zr17 rubber and 17x9.5 rear with 274/40/zr17 rubber. There is a huge difference in the way the car rides, but I think it has more to do with the rear spring swap than the new tires. The car is alot stiffer now. I took out the rear Eibach Sportline springs and swapped in a new 1/2 height 150# linear rate spring and Ground Control weight jacks. The new tires also have reinforced sidewalls which should make the ride stiffer. To be honest I really like the way it rides now when compared to the old ride. It is alot stiffer (bouncy), but the car no longer feels sloppy. I cant wait to do the fronts!! Thanks for the compliments!!

Man, those ROHs looked really good on your car.... but so do these.... in a way I'm sad to see them go, but these new ones are sweet too...
Still think your car is amazing. Keep it up.

The chromed out motor with the GTO stenciled in and the twin turbos is that a Ferrari engine? Damn thats sweet! Your car looks real nice Hawaiian some clear side markers would look great with the clear fog light covers you have. I don't really get the whole front wheel needs to be lower, looks ok to me. Maybe if I saw a good side shot where the whole stance comes together I would notice. Now I am depressed I start thinking my car looks ok then I see all those beauties and it takes me down a notch. Thanks for sharing, and representing the Third Gen Contingent!!

Thanks again guys!! The ROH wheels will make a comeback on my 89 IROC-Z. I've decided to use them as my track wheels for roadracing and drifting.
I thought about the clear side markers, but I really dont like how the 3rd gen side markers look (clear or stock). My Z will be going into the body shop some day, and one of the bodymods I'm going to be doing involves the side markers. The rest of the bodymods will include shaving the side molding, smoothing the stock GFX, and messing with the door handles. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

I say do it Jim. I ordered these wheels way back when I used to have that black 92 B4C Camaro. My original plan was to do exactly what you said. But since I've sold the back car and my new 91 is a brighter color, I decided to leave the wheels polished. I think the black spokes and polished lip would look really really good!! I say go for it!!!

They are Boyd Coddington 'Tuned' Wheels. They were $1600 shipped to my door and the tires were $970 to my door. So a little over $2500. The build quality and fitment is perfect. I highly recommend them to anyone.

personally i think those rims would look better on a 4th gen but they look pretty decent on your car. love the fruity rainbow license plate though.
no offense man, i used to live in hawaii too. *** i hated those plates. are you on oahu or the big island?

I'm on Oahu. I'm still laughing about the rainbow thing ... did you know they renamed the university's sports team to the Hawaii Warriors, because other teams used to tease them about their old name, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. LOL!!!

Yeah it is rare to find one that is well kept and rust free. I've had a rust prone (bad paint) T-top 3rd gen since I was 16. I waited years to find a good condition hardtop car, and it ended up being a black 92 B4C (1LE) car with 92K miles. I thought I was going to keep it forever, but another member here (Benny) made me an offer I couldnt refuse. I ended up selling it to him for $7k. That same week I saw this rust free hardtop 91 Z28 in the paper for $6,500 and it came with alot of extras. So thats where I'm at now, getting ready to redo this 91 Z28 from the ground up.
