275/40/17 means the tire is 275mm wide and the sidewall is 40% of the width and "17" is... you guessed it the rim size.
285/35/18 means the tire is 285mm wide and the sidewall is 35% of the width on an 18" rim.
And do you know what? All three of these sizes have an identical height. Some are wider with a smaller aspect ratio (profile) and some are thinner with a larger aspect ratio.
Here's two of them 245/50/16 & 285/35/18

Reading tires,
215/65R15
215--- width of the tire in mm, so its 21.5cm
65-- means 215X65% (215X.65) is the height of the tire from the rim to to top of it.
R-- Radial tire,
15 Rims size in inches

in school for some reason i had a teacher telling me that the wider the tire the worse the traction. i argued that wider is better other wise why wouldnt drag car use skinier ones. whos right here? Sorry about being off topic but its not totally off

In this case "50" means that the sidewall is 50% of 245mm which means it's about 122.5mm of sidewall from the edge of the rim to the edge/corner of the tire. "16" of course is the rim size.

im running 255 in the front. Im running the yokohamas avs db series and they're awsome. We resently had a rain storm over here at the bay and they were bada** in the rain. I rarly hydroplaned on the highway. The traction is incredable. I got the front tires for 161 each and for the rear tires 171 each, so the total of 778.78. It's alittle pricey but for a quality tire I highly recommend them.
