Rear Window Tint Removal
I bought my 91 Z28 and the rear window tint has a "purple" shade to it..and it looks nasty...I had the passenger and drivers side windows done with 15% window tint and I want it all to match. I asked to see how much I could get my back window tinted for and I was quoted about $75.00....but....it will be an extra $40.00 an hour to remove the rear window tint. My question is....how can I get the back window tinit off...without damaging the rear defrost?....I mean..the lines for the defrost run through the back window....any ideas how or what to use to get the tint off without tearing my defrost up??

Try a search, I searched for the same thing about a month ago and found some stuff. I heard to soak it in ammonia and tape plastic pags over it and let it sit int he sun for a while, then it'll peel right off.

I thought you have had that car for a while, didnt you mention to me a few months ago that you were going to paint your hood soon? Anyway, When I bought my car it had a liquid tint to it and I had no idea how they took it off! If it is regular tint try peeling it unless it is totally baked on there.

I've had my 91 since last July 14th.....I was in a bad accident last June 12th in my old 84 Z28 Camaro (1992 Z28 clone) and I didn't get back to work until recently..(not my fault, we are currently in a lawsuit with the other driver)..and I really haven't had much money to go out and get the back window tinted...I have a sound system in the hatch..and I didn't want anyone to break into it..so I left the rear window tint on. And yeah, I'm going to repaint the whole dog house...hopefully within the month of May or early June. I did a search and it seems that noone has really teared of their rear defroster when peeling off their tinit. I posted this new thread to see if there was any kind of updated solutions that could be used to peel it off with ease. So far....it sounds like a heat gun...and some kind of "goo gone" stuff will work fine.

The people that took my tint off said that the rear defroster could come off if not done right but the also did a ****ttttty tint job so I dont think they have to much credability. You could always call a tint and see what they say!

That sux, I hate to hear anything bad happening on my B-Day (June 12).
But, unless you really need the defroster, scrape everything off with a razor blade and a healthy soak-down of windex. Otherwise, take it to a pro and get charged out the wazoo. Reason I say that is because, I can almost guarntee you that the old tint is not going to just peel off. There will be some adhesive left behind that you will most certainly have to scrape off with the razor blade, and getting inbetween all of the defrost lines and not screwing them up will be next to impossible to do. Not to mention very time consuming. So... its your decision.

I always peel it off trying to take as much as you can off in one pull. Then sometimes youll have sticky glue stuff left on the window left......to take that off i try to work on a smaller area at a time wet it down with "finger nail polish remover" and its wipes off pretty good.

The adhesive
The adhesive left behind is similar to the adhesive on a "Parental Advisory" sticker when you remove it from the CD case. A little bit of work, and you can get that crap off w/ regular cleaners like windex. I haven't tried my defroster (got too many other probs w/ the car), but I used no razor blade, no chemicals, and I got 90% of the tint off the side and back windows without damaging a thing. I did use a hair dryer (on low) and a card, but once you get a section "going", you can nearly work it completely off. I used my car near the edges of the windows just to get a lip to pull on.
Where I'm at a standstill at is those non-defroster lines that are less than 1/4" apart at the very top of the rear glass. The lines are so close that any lip you get cant take the pull between lines and it breaks . Once I figure this out, I'll let you know. As of right now, it seems to be finger nails, aggrivation, and some rock and roll to take your mind off of it.

use a heat gun then when u get it started u have two choices keep on using heat or just start pouring water in that way it gets to the glue
