Painted Calipers (Got Pics?)

My cousin just painted his light pewter metallic LS1 camaro calipers "racing red" and they look freakin awesome!!! I was wondering if anyone had pics of some painted thirdgen calipers.
I got a bright white car w/ silver grnd effects and cant decide on paint color. I think red would look good but dont really want to introduce another color to the outside of my car. What do you guys think?

Well I have a red car and candy apple red calipers (not holding up though, so i may go back to red, red...

I plan to go with body colors or accent colors on my other cars. Scout is going to be yellow, so yellow calipers or drums...82 is going to be pewter and black on the exterior, with blue accents...I may go with any of the 3 colors on it...The rims will probably be powdercoated black or grey, so I will go with whatever looks best with them...

You know you don't have to go with red. You have a white and silver car...3rd gens normally have rusted calipers since they are steel, so anything you do will be an improvement. I say go with white or silver if you don't want to add another color to the exterior. Or go with your accent color, whatever it is.... I used high heat engine paint on mine when they were red, red...They make white and silver in the Duplicolor high heat paints...

Just a thought!

Ha, thats funny stuff. Any way, I have found that the paint gets faded very fast, due to all the brake dust. The rear ( drum equiped only) last longer, since the brake dust stays trapped in the drum. If I were you, Ide go with a darker color in the front, like dark red or dark blue or black. Then, use the brighter color on the rear drums. This is similar to what I did. I painted the front and rear with dupoint ( im pretty sure) engine paint red. The front is faded, because I tried cleaning and it did nothing. Just some thoughts.

Nope, car hasn't moved in 12 months. I may put them on the 96 to remove the rust.

I wouldn't use a bright color on drums, they are nothing special to show off

So you can have painted calipers or painted dust covers.

I got 4 wheel disc's and the more I look at Swede's car the more i'm thinkin red. Decisions like this can make or break a cars appearance. I know white would look good but I cant decide if the glossy red would look better. Did you guys use a clear coat on those? My cousin did and they came out extra shiny.

I used clear coat on mine...Still the brake dust has darkened the inner edges and taken away the shine. And I have yet to find a way to clean them well enough to look as good as when they were installed.

Can you paint the calipers while they are still mounted or do you need to remove them?
I got a glossy red engine paint in my garage so it would save time if one can paint whitout removing the calipers.

Well if you are really good with tape and drop cloths...I guess not. Honestly for and even coat and easy of sanding off the rusty stuff, I would simple take them off the rotor. You don't have to disconect the lines. Just take them off take out the pads and set them on something that will allow them to sit with out hanging and putting too much stress on the brake lines. The first time, I set mine on a brick standing on end. It worked quite well! I let them dry overnight and popped them back on.

yes you can do it with them on the car, just make sure you mask off everything!! and i mean everything because when i did mine i didnt realize that the paint dust floats around in the air and it left a weird colored tint on my paint which sucked, it went away after awhile but save yourself the pain and just masked off everything, good luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask

I painted my calipers and drums with them still on the car .. just masked it off well and sprayed them black with some high heat engine paint.

@Zepher .. I was close heh, it will be badass when done either way.

We left the calipers hanging by the brake lines on my cousins and they came out pretty good. 4 bolts removing the calipers off the rotor. I would definetly take them off. Makes life that much easier.

I just left the caliper on the car, didn't mask anything either; I just took off the wheels and sprayed the calipers a Chevy red/orange engine paint. I wish I would have used red, but the only red was Ford red. Oh well, I should have realized it was just paint name, not quality. Anyways, doing it my way turned out just fine for me. When I replace my pads this summer, they won't be orange anymore, they'll be the color of the pad. The caliper paint is holding up just fine; I sanded them a little bit before I shot the paint too.

Oh yeah, my rotors are starting to begin to look similart to Zephers. I'm going on about 6 months without the car having a tranny.

I have pictures somewhere, just not on the net (that I know of.) If I find them, I'll scan in what I have.

Why not use a brush instead of spraying ?

Not exactly sure, but my guess would be because the closer you get to the calipers, the more evident the brush strokes would be. Also, masking everything and spraying everything is probably faster.

CRZYTRN-92Z28, you really dont have to mask anything, just clean off whatever is on the calipers with brake cleaner and/or a wire brush then put a fan behind you and a pice of cardboard above the brake and spray where you want the color to be. the fan will blow all of the overspray under your car and the cardboard will funnel the air with overspray away from your paint and keep anything from getting in the wheel well area. use silver or white on your brakes and they will look great, and just buy the 500 degree paint, the 1500 stuff is way overboard brakes only get to about 300 at the most. clear coat will be a waste brake dust gets on the calipers quick and clear or not they wont be shiny.

Thanks!! The fan and cardboard sounds like a good idea that will save time and give the same or better results. I've been thinking about it alot lately and am now leaning toward the white.

no problem. if you have the stock iroc wheels dont stress too much on the color your going to paint your calipers, only about an inch or two of the caliper shows. i took some pics of mine also for yall to see.

Nothing fancy, just factory 4-wheel disc. All four Calipers painted Metalic Silver, they look aluminum!
