What can I do to protect my car from hail?

I live right smack in the middle of Tornado alley and live in an apartment. So, my car sits outside. The other night, we had some strong storms come through, and it hailed quite a bit. It got up to about nickel size and I was FREAKING OUT! As soon as it stopped, I went out and checked my car and it looked okay. But what could I use to protect my car from bigger hail? About this time of year, it starts storming almost every day. Supposed to have some bad storms tomorrow night and Monday. I'd like to get something quick! Hail sucks! I've seen it a LOT bigger than nickel size around here. We had baseball hail last spring. Not cool. Matt

I don't know if this would be silly or not.. but what about a car cover that has some thick foam padding. like 1 of 2 inch foam. We don't usually get hail that big, so it's not a problem. But I agree with you. I'd be freeking out also ..

insure it.

but you could always use a heavy blanket or old sleeping bag under a normal car cover until you can find one with thick foam.

Bury it underground, put 10 coats of wax on it...

Seriously , only but a few ways to protect it really, shelter or I would assume like mentioned a well padded cover.

this might sound funny, but have u seen one of those egg caton foam things that u put on your bed? buy 2 of those (there like $5 a piece) and lay them over your car and put the car cover on top of it..i think it should work

That sound good but you may have problems keeping the padding in place while you put the cover on,could be frustrating. He may have to cut and fit the padding to the shape of the car or cut in sections and then spray glue the padding to the bottom of the cover to make it easier to put on.

also, if you do that, make sure the 'points' of the egg crate are toward the car, not the cover.

id say glue it to the cover with some..i have no clue..spray ahedisive i guess (speling??) and patrickm00 is right, make sure the points are down, they are up then there will only be about 1/3" to 1/2" of padding instead for like 2 1/2"

wouldnt putting foam under the cover trap moisture under it? I suppose it wouldn't really matter if the cover comes off everyday though. Do you drive this thing every day, or will it be sitting like this for an extended period of time?

in that case, you could put on a waterproof cover, then the foam/paddeing glued to another cheaper cover on top.

one idea... MOVE AWAY!! lol but that idea with the foam, that is a great idea, then just throw a car cover over it to keep it on. and water out.

go to autozone or pepboys or someone like that and see how much those Car Tents are. that would be the best fix for ur problem. and there nice to keep the car in or even for waxin the car in the summer.

i dont have one but it would be a good investment and then get 2 car covers. at pepboys we sell 2 different types. one for like 60bucks which is an all weather waterproof one and that has little vents on the front and rear and te other one is a very soft cloth that is waterproof also and lets the mositure if any exscape thru the faberic and thats about 120bucks. i have both on my car and its great.

but id try and invest in one of those car tent things. might be very good for ur area.

How would he anchor the tent down on concrete?...not to mention the high winds that are usually associated with hail storms would blow that tent away.

We see severe hail in these parts and I use moving blankets to protect my ride.I tuck the one for the hood under the wiper blades and the hood itself.I tuck the one for the rear window in the spoiler and for the roof I partially open the windows and tuck em in there. Our storms usually only last for about a half hour or so and then I remove the blankets when it's safe to do so.I would rather have a slightly damp interior than a banged up exterior. Those blankets are fairly thick and I have no damage to speak of yet. We're used to pea sized hail and on a few occasions we get the golf ball sized.

I would just buy big boards of foam and put it over top of your car and then put a tarp over top. It works well, it takes in most the impact, so I highly suggest it for your problem

We are talking Hail Stones not bricks. A good car cover should to be enough protection and if the Hail get that big let your insurance cover it.

I geuss that you haven't seen hail stones the size of golf ***** and baseballs have you? Also just a car cover will not always help either.Ever seen one of those weather channel espisodes about really bad weather or tornado chasers?I remember one where these 2 chasers were stuck in traffic in a SUV and all of the sudden hail istarts falling pretty bad.Well by the time it was over they no longer had a windsheild and rear window. The SUV's hood and roof looked like somebody took a hammer to it. Granted that it doesn't get that extreme all the time but it does happen like that.

A tent wouldn't really be a good idea. 70 - 80mph winds aren't uncommon around here. We're moving into a house with a GARAGE this summer, but I can't get out of the lease on my stupid apartment at the moment. I thought about just packing up and moving my **** anyways and not paying the $1,200 it would cost me to break the lease, but they'd probably sue me and report me to the credit bureau. Also, somebody mentioned that it's hail, not bricks. Obviously, they've never been to Oklahoma in the springtime. We've had hail in this state the size of basketballs. Never seen it personally, but you see it on the news. Just last year, they had grapefruit size hail just to the west of me. At the time, I hated all the cars I had then, so I was HOPING it would come my way. When I was a kid, I can remember living in a trailer. It had a tin roof. One night the tornado siren was going off. We had a storm shelter about 50 feet from the house outside. There was hail coming down the size of grapefruits. My dad had his truck in our barn, but the hail still came through the roof and smashed the windows. They also had a VW super beetle, and it was totally destroyed. The roof was pounded down, the hood caved in, the back was crushed with damage to the engine. That hail was hitting the tin roof in our house. We couldn't go outside to the shelter because the hail would kill you if it hit you. The tornado went down our street and missed our house by bout 100 feet. VERY scary. I was about 10 years old at the time. Anyways, I'm just reflecting on my trailer trash childhood in Oklahoma. I DON'T have a ****** by the way. The weather here is no joke. Hail sucks. It IS like bricks! Matt
