agh! i lost a T-top!

Okay so i have NO idea where to put this...

heres the story , i was cruising this morning about 90 on the way to work ..i noticed a sound like rushing air i looked up and i guess i 4 got to lock my t-top down ( right drivers side, so i reached up to turn the latch and it lifted up and flew off! !! it smacked the car behind me and shattered!? ..So i kept going scared as hell.. and got off the freeway , turned around go back on the freeway and found the brace w/NO glass.....

So what do i do know ? where would i find one ? Dont say a local junk yard there is no firebirds / camaro parts left ehre in N.M. ...

so anywhere online? or does anyone have one they want to sell? it looks horrible w/o it damn i am all pissed

Theres quite a few junkyards in the Texas Area that have them. But your best bet is probably Ebay. I hate to say it. You can also hit up http://www.Uneedpart.com. I have no idea what they will go for. Hope this helps.

Ha! My cousin did the same thing in his 83 Trans Am. He was driving to pick up his girlfriend and he forgot to latch BOTH t-tops. Swoosh.....Swoosh.

:sillylol:

he went to a junk yard and got two replacements.

So you lost your Driver's t-top? My bro has a spare glass t-top but its the passenger side.

I had one fly off this summer but it luckly flew off into the grass. Here is the brake down.
Pick'n pull places=usually 60-$70
They pull it and you tell them what you need= $75-150
Auto glass shops (refurbished)= 250-450
GM (Hold on to your *****)= brand new at $980 something-1k for one.

I had a similiar thing happen but it was w/ my old 82 280zx & my hood actually flew off. I also did not stop & it just at night & I have no idea were it landed or if it hit anybody. This was 10 years old & I still fell bad if it hurt someone else. What happened was I just got into an accident and the hood was totalled. I went to a junk yard a screwed the new hood on. I guess I didn't tighten it enough & at 90mph the hood came clear off just missing my windshield. Boy I was dumb back then.

Hey 600 -

I think my uncle has a set in his garage. Let me know if you are interested and what you think is a fair price after you get some quotes. I will take a look at them if you are interested and tell you what condition they are in.

PM me if interested.

Anyone have any idea what shipping would be on them. I'd be shipping from NJ.

KZad

is it just me or am i the only one that thinks the whole cruzin at 90 a bit dangerous in itself...

I guess I don't have the guts to cruise at that speed. I mean the fastest Ive ever gone was 90 for like two seconds coming home from St. Louis heading east on Interstate 64. This was at like 10 pm....dark.

It was nothing but strait flat farmland and open road. I was thinking, "if a deer jumps out or something like that im toast." so I slowed down.

600_dollars, You got lucky that he or the police didn't follow/catch you, Hit and run is a serious driving infraction.

You can't miss a t-top coming off and if i'm ever on the interstate and get hit by one I'll be hitting triple digits myself to catch the person who lost it

ok dude i have two t-tops at my house right now. they are in good condition both are glass. there is one problem though. i have an 89 camaro with glass t-tops and the ones i have at my house are too big. they are like too wide or somehting. my next door neighbor gave them to me and i really have no use for them. if anyone wants them ill give you a reasonable deal.

Had that happen to me once before too, except mine missed the car behind me and flew into some bushes by a lake, mine are Lexan though they just got scratched up alot. I got some weird looks from the people fishing in the lake when I asked them "Have you seen a peice of my roof?"

same thing happened to me about 2 years ago, i was drivin to work when i was greeted by that disturbing horrible swooshing sound, i looked up to see the passenger side t-top lift up and come back down , i began to slow down so i could latch it and it flew right off , lucky for me it didnt hit anything except the pavement. so i did a U-turn and drove back to my house where i yanked one off my parts car, drove back to where it flew off and picked up the only peice that was left (it broke into a million peices), and still made it to work on time i changed out the lock cylinders and later that day it was like it never even happened.

my buddy is sellin a set of t-tops on ebay right now, they are only $25 and theres no bids, you can probably get em pretty cheap .here

This is a little off topic, but has anyone ever had a passenger in your 3rd going down the road look up, grab the t-top handle and ask does this open the t-top? I was in and i look over and my ex-gf has her hand on the t-top handle and is asking me if it opens it up. ( going 55mph at the time) AHHHH!!

Just make sure the ones you get are from a similiar year...there are at least three different styles/sizes of latches on them, not to mention the C&C ones which are a different size altogether.
The earliest ones (82 & 83 for sure, maybe even 84) used a 'hook'-type latch, while the later ones used straight 'pins' with the size of the pins changing around 88 or so (not sure of the exact year).

You know what. The other day, I found a cell phone outside. I looked at the numbers on it and found one to locate the lost phones owner. I called them, and they were very greatful. Just the other day I lost mine, and someone returned it to me just the same I had done for the other person. Just my way of sayin, YOUR ACTION'S WILL ALWAYS COME BACK TO YOU. In one form or another. Just like when you get to much change at the store, and you decide not to say anything, doesn't it always seem like somethin happens to take it anyway.

600_dollars, I'm glad you did call the cops to see if anyone had filed a report. Even if the car that was behind you was a pos stang or ric_er it still would have been better if you stoped to exchange insurance information. When ever I buy me a t'top IROC I am going to get a back up set of t'tops.

Glad to hear you called the cops and tried to set it straight. It would have been better if you did it on the spot. Your insurance won't go up over something like this. It's also the right thing to do, even if there was a chance of it going up. You need to be responsible for your actions. Usually, dumb mistakes do cost you, and that's what helps you learn not to do it again. I'm done preaching, but I would be pissed if I was driving home and my car got damaged.

Last spring, I was driving my new truck, a 2001 Silverado Extended cab Z71 when the truck in front of me decided to take a side road. He missed the off ramp and went off road. The area of shoulder he hit was full of water so he thought it would be funny to hit the gas. Little did he know, under the water was 1" rock. My new truck was hit by over 100 rocks, me driving 70mph, and every rock chipped the paint down to bare metal. It cost me an insurance deductible to get the entire drivers side and hood repainted. A new truck with a repaint that isn't the exact same finish as factory, all because these guys took off after damaging my truck

I was in and i look over and my ex-gf has her hand on the t-top handle and is asking me if it opens it up. ( going 55mph at the time) AHHHH!!
I keep mine locked at all times. I also try not to have idiots in my car.

at 90mph the hood came clear off just missing my windshield. Boy I was dumb back then.
Back in the 50s or 60s, either Mercedes or Porsche had one of there cars lose the hood at Le Mans going right past the grandstands. Result - the hood flew straight into the grandstands killing approx. 30 people, decapitating several of them. You can usually see the actual footage in any documentary about the car maker's history.

"I had a similiar thing happen but it was w/ my old 82 280zx & my hood actually flew off. " that great!! with my 85 300zx my hood decided that it didn't wanna latch one day so it came up and took the liberty of smacking my windshield too. that was expensive.
i've got t-tops on there i never forget to lock them but i just wish the damn things would stop leaking.

Yep, on a trip to Tallahassee this past weekend. It was me, my girlfriend, my bestfriend, and his girlfriend, who is my ex-girlfriend, who is my girlfriend's best friend. That's pretty twisted. Anyway, the girlds were in the back and my ex was like, "What's this handle for" We stopped her right before she pulled it. I was going about 70 at the time

To stay on topic, this has never happened to me. Hope you find a new t-top! And keep it closed!

Wouldnt it be awful if you had a targa top and it came off and shattered during a heavy rainstorm miles away from civilization? LOl, if I get me a t'top car and someone tries to pull on the handle. I'll stop them and tell them if they pull on it will eject them from the car. When that top comes off they going right after it while the cars still in motion.
