I'll tell you why not "just buy a 4th gen"...they're not built as well, they're harder to work on (due to engine placement), and to me its far cooler to improve an older car than just buy a new one.
Yeah dont forget about the little problem that alot of fourth gen owners run into. The earlier lt1 optispark distributors didnt have screens for moisture to evaporate through..... Its an expensive problem or an expensive swap to a later year optispark dissy. My buddy bought a fourth gen and has been chasing down little electrical nightmares for a while now. Two alternators later he figured the problem out (user error). LOL oh well. I cant afford one.

Then once 4th gens reach the mid to upper 100,000s, they start having fusible link and ignition probems when starting. Fun,fun! This happened to Joe's 94 Camaro and a friend's TA.

I think someone has to recruit this guy/girl to this site. They can do some serious modding and I would like to know how some of it was done and what they have in a car like that.

HEY EVERYONE,

The guy who owns that camaro owns a body shop in Houston Texas. I would suggest somebody go down to his shop and talk to him. I also have that article scanned in and readable too.

The name of the shop is HI Tech collision repair shop. The owner's name is Tim Lane. (according to Super Chevy)

The article is from July 1999, Super Chevy.

I had it hosted on Yahoo at the readable size, but they shrunk it so you have to IM, PM, or email me for it, then I can send it to you.

BTW, the artilcle's car has a different engine bay/firewall than the one up top with all of the differences. This definately has a lot of talent.

Later,
Jesse

HOLY CRAP! Its all coming back to me now....I spoke with that guy a long time ago, probably shortly after July 99. I think I'm going to give that guy a call and take a ride down there. Sonar_un and I will prolly go down there and take a whole bunch of digital pics.

It's all 3rdgen except the interior ,inner fenders and maybe the firewall. In the article from July '99 Super Chevy he used 2 cars to make that one and used the dash from a '96 Z28,seats from a Beretta GTZ and headlights from an '87 Euro ed Monte Carlo.

OK guys, a small update here. It had been pouring down rain here for the last couple if weeks, so I hadnt called him till now. He's willing to let me go check out the car, but there is one problem....the car is going to be taken apart this weekend. I guess they had to take it out one day in the rain (WITH NO WIPERS!?!?), and it got flooded. Not sure if the interior was damaged, but the engine bent a rod. They will be doing an LS1 swap on it from a 2000 Z28 with 2700 miles on it. Sonar_un is going to try and head down there on Friday, and if he doesnt get around to it, I'm going to go down there on Saturday if they'll let me in. I'm gonna be PISSED if neither of us can get down there....

Thanks for the nice compliments.
This is my husband's car. It was originally a 1988 IROC hardtop. My husband purchased this car new in 88.

Lets see if I can answer a few questions.

#1. Scott_92RS,
Thanks for inviting us to this site. I'll check in once in a while.
Should have gone to SChevy!

#2. FLYNLOW92rs,
No stereo in this car. It had nice equipment in the earlier years.
no wiper - they are ugly. Since complete again in 2001 - car is DAILY DRIVER!!!! (yes, even in the rain - that's how it got flooded!)

#3. 91Zman,
The car used to be exactly waht you saw in 99 Super Chevy mag, but was changed in 2001. 97 30th anniv. car was doner this time. The car was clipped from front seats forward. All 97 K-member was added. (fron & rear suspension) Interier was completely changed. Sold the chrome street and performance TPI and added 97 LT1 and tranny. New 4th gen. firewall was reconstructed.

#4. tomster03,
not fiberglass... factory 97 clip.

#5. oldblueZ,
yep. body shop in South Houston. We do collision repair, not custom stuff.

#6. meridius,
happy to help.

#7. Ryche400,
the white SS vert next to 88 is my car! 2002 white SS vert! (not a daily driver)

#8. LT1guy,
yes, 4th gen firewall, but we did some smoothing and new metal pieces across the top.

#9. redraif,
headlights have been in the car since 1988. Monte Carlo lights.

#10. 1982 chevycamaroz28,
wrong..... the car had been a daily driver for almost 2 years now.

#11. chevyguy1969,
lots of money.... Hubby likes to make things look factory. We also own a 2002 SS vert, a 2001 Prowler, 1999 vette a show truck and a 2003 Tahoe.

#12. Makaveli,
Same car, but changed. When the car was featured in Super Chevy the car was a full blown show circuit car. It was never driven. It was all for looks.

#13. SMURFN'Z28,
it's not hoopty paint - it's classic flames. They never go out of style! Why are factory Z06 wheels hoopty?????

#14. CaysE,
my door panels - My husband built them.

#15. Sonar_un,
Tim Lane's car! The orange truck in the background is ours too!!!
1991 chevy - Featured in December 2002 issue of Sport Truck! (CopperHead)

#16. MetallicCamaroRS,
The headlights are not fogged. They are OLD - been in the car since 1988.

#17. RU-QWIK,
Yes, hubby has skillz!

#18. HrdRockA4305,
1997 30th anniversary parts.

#19. devianb,
That's Copperhead. It's ours also. Featured in December 2002 Sport Truck.

#20. 86FyrBrd,
88 with 4th gen added.

#21. Jim85IROC,
TACKY????? CLASSIC

#22. 91Zman,
Feel the Burn - glad you kept the article!!

I hope I answered some of your questions. As mentioned before the car was flooded last Thursday. New doner car 200 Z. Now it will have an LS1 in it!

Talk to ya later
Teri

Keep up the good work! While you are at it, throw on an ATI blower to that LS1. That would really kick some ***. Good luck with it.

Hello Teri.

Its nice to know we have a new member to the boards who is knowleadgeable with thirdgen stuff, even though that car is mostly 4th gen now

I was going to call up Tim either tomorrow or Friday and hope to get down there to the body shop and take some pics of the car, hopefully before the teardown. I know there are many questions that everyone has been asking and it would be great if we got some answers, that is, if your hubby wouldn't mind answering

What I think is probabally the most amazing thing is that he did all of this to that car, yet he has never heard of this website. Shame..shame

Fatal88 I love the car. It's amazing. I'm going to look at a 89 IROC vert tomorrow and if I buy it, I'd like to do very similar mods......

Once again love the car.

After seeing your car featured in SC I was so amazed at all of the work done to it and how cleanly done it was.I had contemplated on copying your paint scheme and the Monte Carlo headlights onto my car, still might do it.I hadn't really looked into it that much but finding the headlights(and accessories) and making them fit kinda scared me off,may still try that if I can figure it out.I managed to find an '87 Monte Carlo Euro ed in a junkyard near me but the car was full of wasp nests and I'm allergic to them.Any info on the headlights would be appreciated if you want to share it.

My husband installed those headlights in 1988. They are probably pretty hard to find now. I have no other info about them.

Car: too many ...
I think the car is awesome. Good job!! Sorry other people on here are so rude. It actually only happens in the Appearance & Detailing forums. Majority of the posters are at a teenager maturity level when they give 'opinions.' But this thread has been pretty good so far if you can believe it (you should see what happens in other threads regarding custom stuff, yikes). I think you guys did an awesome job with all that custom work. The paint and wheels dont agree with me, but nonetheless, the ammount of work and attention to detail is amazing. I have also been in the show truck scene for a while, and I am aiming to apply a 'show truck' touch to a 3rd gen. Currently I'm working with Alter-Images on designing some custom body mods. They are really really good at making cutom sheet metal. My plans as of now are 18" billet deep dish wheels (they are sweet Boyd Coddigtons!), a 3" drop (adjustable and slammed for shows), a full 2001 T/A interior including the dash, the console, and the doorpanels, then custom painted and all the accessories (momo interior stuff, race seats), a full sound system (no DVD or video though hehe), and top it off with a new paintjob (painting everything .. even firewall) GM Fairway Green (same color as my truck). For engie mods I'm planning a L98 built for nitrous and a t56 6 speed from a 93-97 LT1 car. Hoping to run 12's on the bottle. I plan to enter the car into shows as well as race it. Always good to see a custom plan come together. Good job on your 88!!

Do you have anymore pics of the T-tops being cut? also where did you get all the parts neccessary for the convertable top? I was interested in making a convertable out of my car but my interest soon faded when all the responses I got for asking questions about is the conversion, would collapes from there not being enough structure left in the car. even though every vert from GM was a hard top cut later by a company hired out by GM. How did you make the car structurly sound, frame rail connectors? need more info!!! Nice car overall, do the airebags still work, how about the ABS......

I'll look for more pics when we clipped the car.
We bought a wrecked convertible for the parts. Basically we clipped the car and placed the top clip from the other car in it's place. Just had to do some basic measurements. We had already added structure braces in the floorboard of the car when we clipped it for T-tops. Airbags work - we used the entire wiring harness from the 97. ABS works as well.
