Painting & polishing 91 z28 rims done (Pics inside)

I know the pics don't have the center caps but they are polished
and in the shop waiting for me to finish repolishing the wheels
after painting. I painted the inserts a dark charcoal metallic that
my uncle mixed at the shop, and clear coated. My 84 z28
is red but the interior is charcoal and red, and I don't like red inserts
(most of the time), so I matched it to the interior color. I already
got the Kumho 255/50-16's in a week ago and they should be
mounted and on the car in about 2 weeks. I will post some pics
of my car with them mounted as soon as I'm done with the
engine swap. I can't wait to get the z back on the road . Let me
know what you think of the wheels.

91Bird305 - you are running 255/50-16 Kumho Ecsta Supra's I think . I was just wondering what you think of them
and do the sidewalls bulge at all. I picked up four of them for
$89 a piece from tirerack.com, and will be mounting them soon.
Anyways, they have to be an improvement over the 235/60-15's
I'm running now .

Nazz, I love my Kumho's. A great improvement over my Futra's I used to have. They don't buldge out and they look awesome. Here is a better picture.

Wow that came out so much better after repolishing. Maybe I'll repolish my two that I have done before I finally get around to painting them. What did you do to "repolish"? just like 400 grit up to 1500 wet?

91Bird305 - Thanks for the info. about the tires, and by the way
I like the bird. I usually don't like the 91-92 firebirds but yours
looks really nice .

MetalliCamaroRS - When I taped up the rims I had to rough up the
polished surfaces with 2000 grit to get the tape to adhere. After
the painting I pulled of the tape and some adhesive was left on the
polished surfaces, as well as some clear that got under the tape in
some corners. I wet sanded with 2000 grit paper again quickly to
get rid of the adhesive and over spray. Then I hand polished with
Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. I used a terry cloth applicator
and buffed with a flannel cloth. Thanks for the response and good
luck with your wheels, post some pics when your done .

Wow that looks incredible... I tried polishing my rims. I didnt sand them tho it looks like you sanded down all the machine grooves. I was happy with how the wheels looked after striping the clear coat , but now that i have seen yours I am going to re-do them all. How long did it take you on each wheel?

91dubz28 - Thanks for the compliment. I would say start to finish
it took about 12 hours a rim. This includes stripping, wet sanding (220,
320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 all by hand), cleaning and
taping for paint, painting, resanding with 2000 grit after painting,
and polishing. I have to admit that it is a winter project, and the
only reason I did it in the summer is because my car is under going
major modifications (engine swap, rebuilt trans, new cooling system,
and exhaust). If the car was on the road and these were the wheels
on the car then I would of waited till winter to do it. Good luck
doing you wheels and post some pics when done.

lock - I used a dark smoked grey metallic. It has rough aluminum
in it to give it the sparkle. I sprayed with a self etching primer, then 2 coats of the base color then 2 coats of clear.

Those wheels are sweet!! You should write up a tech article on polishing. I'm sure alot of guys would be interested--I know I would for my GTA wheels!

lock - the paint was mixed by my uncle at his paint shop, and the
wheels were sprayed using a detailing gun in his booth.
