Ditch Vortecs for AFR 912 heads?
My current setup:
383 Stroker
Vortec Stealth Ram
Vortec Heads with Comp 981 springs
Comp Cams XE274H - 230/236 .490 .490
3000 stall
Primarily street\strip car
Looking at picking up a set of the 190cc "912" AFR heads to replace the vortecs. I would also add some 1.6RR's on with the new heads...Reason being I remember seeing a dyno comparison in a magazine of a vortec headed motor vs a AFR195 motor with the XE274 and the AFR's making almost 50hp more. Not sure where in the RPM range that 50hp is mind you. Any one with real world results? I think I would be disappointed if I spent $1400 on heads to only pick up 20hp.
Thanks

For 1400 I could score you a set of brand new 195 afr heads they will walk all over the Vortecs everywhere. The old 190 afr head was a nice piece and reeealy worked well if ported by the right person. Not cost effective though when comparing to a new set of Eliminators.

Re: Ditch Vortecs for AFR 912 heads?
The 195s are good heads, but unless he wants to change intakes he's kind of limited to the Vortec style heads. Flow numbers provided by AFR on a 4.060" bore, 28"H20 1-3/4 pipe
Intake/Exhaust@Lift
135/110@.200
213/158@.300
253/190@.400
276/207@.500
279/211@.550
AFR195s
146/119@.200
201/166@.300
247/197@.400
275/213@.500
280/218@.550
Not too bad when you consider the port differences between the 2. As far as real world numbers and comparisons I haven't found anything. Going off your Vortec to 195 comparison, you should gain as much.

Re: Ditch Vortecs for AFR 912 heads?
I think the vortec AFR's will gain good power over the GM non ported vortecs. I'd guess 30hp easily and that may be on the low side. Port the HSR to match the head. The valve size and increased cross sectional area of the AFR vortec will be greatly appreciated by the 383's displacement and that cam's rpm range.
Its good bit of coin to drop but will make good gains in power, but i'd like to see abit more cam lift if possible to compliment the heads abit better. 1.6 rockers would help if the .490" is with 1.5's
Alternative is to have the vortecs ported out and re-valved for 2.02-2.05 valve. I've seen guys post up great numbers for ported vortecs with larger valves and well matched intake/cam setups. Cost however may end up being a good bit of money for porting but certainly less money than AFR's.
Thing to consider tho is compression with each setup. Iron vs Aluminum. Going to aluminum and not increasing compression to compensate for extra heat loss will lose some of the power you'd gain. The flow and increased cross section should still make some but compression always helps.
