Didnt one of those just sell on ebay? But he had epoxy all in the ports, and they looked smaller than yours. You bought this new?

The fuel rails originally bolt down on the outer holes, the inner one is obviously for the allen head for the upper plenum. All the bolts are metric BTW.

The egr and thermostat bolt holes are not metric, just like the stock TPI intake.

Re: Mcfarland "short ram" TPI intake manifold

I'm curious for the high price you paid, why not just buy a mini-ram? I know it's unique and all but there has to be a reason why more of them are not around either they were priced sky high when new or not smog legal swap.

My best friend was going to buy it for his project but decided to go with a mini-ram after bidding got really high.

I have $988 in this intake, the mini ram is how much.
Manifold $895.00
Fuel rails $295.00
EGR kit $195.00
Total $1385.00

About $ 400.00 less for this one, so i don't think it was a high price.

About 10 years from now we will be saying the same thing about the BBK intake and you might find some of the preproduction units on Ebay then.

But though the price was cheaper can it flow as good as a mini-ram? I thought the BBK turtle thing hasn't even been produced yet.

I will have it on the flow bench soon. I like it's longer runners then a mini ram but still shorter then a single 4 intake and the plenum is 2 or 3X the size of a mini ram so it has less of a chance of making the rear 4 cylinders going rich like most mini ram owners know about. I hope the runners are smaller it's going on a 304 CID motor.

BBK has a couple of them for testing and if a production run is not made you will find them on ebay 10 years from now when someone is cleaning out the shop of all the old prototype stuff.

So what's the story behind this intake, in a historic sense?

I wish I knew more about them. Twin-turbo has used - tested one and then one more was listed on ebay, the one I have and it's the only ones i have ever seen. When i won the auction i requested the person that was selling call me and he did, it was a short call and he said he was an ex employee that was back just to clean out an r&d shop the Jim Mcfarland used back in the very early 90s. At that to Jim was working for Flowmaster the muffler people and the intake was shipped in a flowmaster box and thats all i know about them.

I think he meant used. I often see minirams in the FS section for around $900 complete. I think I sold mine for that a year or so ago. I wouldn't pay TPIS asking price for a new one either.

Good luck on the intake. Looks cool, and surely will open the door to many track side discussions in the pits!

I also bid on both of those intakes and keep kiking my self for not getting one of them. John Lingenfelter used them on the Calaway Sledghammer, the one that went 250 mph. Google the car and watch the video its verry impressive for a 406cid L98.

Exactly, it's not the same. The sledgehammer intake is a 100+ intake. available as an option on the later twin turbos

Here is a TPIS miniram that sold on ebay for ~$1k with throttle-body, rails, regulator, harness, 30# injectors, all sensors, and even DFI included.

Haven't seen Jim McFarland's name in a while. Probably most of the members of this site have no idea who he is, nor how influential he's been to both the hot rod industry as well as it's community. Just a few of the multitude of entries in his extensive engineering resume was working for Edelbrock for nearly 20 years, as Tech editor for Hot Rod magazine, and as a consultant for GM as well as several aftermarket companies. Guy is a true genius.
